Bug: Windows Msg + Sound = memory Leak by djeffrey on 06-21-2004 at 06:55 PM

Background configuration information:
Windows 2000 Pro SP4 (384 MB memory)
Windows Messenger 5.0.0468
Messenger Plus! 3.01.94
Windows Media Player 9

Everytime someone send me a sound effect, within the msmsgs.exe process (not msgplus.exe) the memory goes through the roof and keeps on going taking with it all the CPU.  Normally the memory usage on MSMsgs is around 6 to 8 Mb, and Virtual Memory size is 7 to 9 MB.  If someone send me a /shello, then the memory usage goes to 35 MB and VM size on msmsgs.exe climbs to 35 MB.

After the sound is done playing, it continue to eat up virtual memory, and sometime it will stop around 60 MB of VM... the only way to fix the problem is to stop Windows Messenger and restart it.

I have tried both MPEG1 & 2, neither helps.

Suggestions, fixes???

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks
Darren

are you using any anti-virus software?
are you using any ad/spyware scanning software?
If so, which one(s)?

When Messenger Plus! plays one of its sounds, it loaded the default mp3 codec registered on the system. You are apparently using a codec that's very bad and that's leaking memory :).
