POP3 by Waggi on 06-24-2004 at 11:23 AM

Hiya all,

I've been told this is the place where all msn plus knowledge exists so i thought i'd drop in.  I was trying to get msn plus to read my second hotmail account and my Yahoo! account but it wasn't working. Could someone give me details of what i need to put in all the boxes (these will have to be precise as i get easily confused!!!)

Thanks

Waggi

Hotmail and Yahoo don't offer POP3 options. Hotmail and Outlook can work together trough HTTP. You can however check e-mail from other e-mailadresses who do give the option for POP3 like your ISP will propably do.

Thanks!

How do you get outlook to use hotmail? Is it true that when outlook downloads mail it takes it out of your hotmail account thus keeping the storage usage small?

Thnx

Although Kryptonate is technically correct, it is possible to check Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail accounts by using special programs that act as if Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail were POP accounts.

For Hotmail, such a program is Hotmail Popper.

  1. Open the zip file and extract the one file that's in it.
  2. Open the file you just extracted, installation will begin.
  3. Click Next
  4. Choose program folder, click Next
  5. Choose when to start Hotmail Popper (both enabled recommended)
  6. Click Next
  7. A flame icon will be added to the taskbar (next to the clock)
  8. Right click that icon
  9. Choose Help
  10. Scroll to How do I use it, and follow the instructions
  1. Now, to set up the checking in Messenger Plus!:
  2. Go to the Preferences, POP mail section
  3. Enter your email address
  4. Enter your username (part before @hotmail.com) and password
  5. Enter 127.0.0.1 as POP3 server
Basically, that's how you can set it up.

As for Yahoo! Mail, I'd advise you to use YahooPops, which you can download from http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net. That site also contains detailed instructions on how to set it up (not with Plus! specifically, but the details are pretty much the same).

Good luck :)

Yes and no.
Outlook (Express) has an option to check HTTP accounts, and it knows the exact configuration necessary already - because both the program Outlook and Hotmail are Microsoft services.
No: by using Hotmail in Outlook (Express), you can read it from the server in Outlook Express, without deleting it.
Yes: you can simply remove it to your local folders and delete it from the server, so you'll have a copy without taking up storage space.

Hope this answers your question :)

I read on these forums a very long time ago about using pop3 with yahoo etc and read this and it seems to work fine with me and i havent downloaded anything like the stuff you guys have mentioned. The pop account is checked regularly and displays correctly.

for yahoo i have:

EmailAddress@yahoo.com.au
pop.mail.yahoo.ca       :     100
my login and password
and the link loads the yahoo mail page.

so yea hope that works for you as i read it from here in the first place and works for me.
