Heres how to steal peoples emoticons/smileys :D by shockingu on 07-08-2004 at 12:39 PM

Okay, foget the stupid emoticon stealers, TOO MUCH SPACE WASTED, on some thing that you can do your self.
This is really easy.

Okay, when your contact sends you a emoticon, you open wordpad. click on the emoticon so it becomes highlighted. you then need to drag it into wordpad. make sure that only the emoticon is added to your wordpad, as if text is draged into it then this might not work.
Next in wordpad, right click the emoticon and click copy.
Now open paint, and make the document a size of 1 by 1 pixels, and go to edit, then past. on some paint versions it will ask you to resize the document, click yes to this. now paint should have your emoticon you want and it should also be at the right size. now is all you do is save it and add to your emoticon list for msn messenger.

How i found this out, I DONT HAVE A CLUE. lol i really dont know how i thought to do this.

NOTES:
to open paint, go start, all programs(or for some operating systems it is programs) then Accessories, paint and wordpad are both here.

to resize the document in paint, you need to go to image then attributes.

if you dont understand then ask and i will explain ;)

Thanks to OLE, btw. But anyway, too much work. Grab a CEDP-stealer and you're done. You also get them in the right format and not Paintized background-messed BMP's or JPG's (don't try to export GIF with Paint).

Anyway, good to know it works this way.
Thanks.

hahaha, yeah i agree with keystorm, too much trouble to go through, it's much faster and much easier with a CE/DP stealer

It's easier with StuffPlug :)

In fact you don't need any program to "steal" DP's and CE's; you don't need an external DP/CE Stealer, nor a plugin...... It is only a matter of copying some cached files like you would copy any file....

And the method you described, shockingu, is very very complicated and very dodgy. Furthermore, this will NOT "grab" the exact emoticon, but "makes" a copy of it......

The right method (and this is the EXACT method that every DP/CE stealer uses):
DP's and CE's of your contacts are always automaticly stored in your "Temporary Internet Files"-folder as normal png files with a *.BIN extension. Just copy those files to any other folder, rename them to *.PNG and your done.... There is NOTHING more you must do....

Iforgot about the stuffplug, i formated comp and i forgot to indstall, thanks for telling me this ;) also i said this because of a DP and CE stealer, that had a trogen horse in it. so i thought that people would use this information.

Im now off to get stuffplugNG yaaaaaaay, thanks for telling me.

Yes, but it's nice to have a GUI to do this (yeah, I'm a bit lazy ;))

the problem is that paint cant handle transparent backgrounds

Hmm... I think the tip is useful for people who occasionally want to copy an emoticon but don't want to install some dodgy stealer program (me :p).

Note that you don't have to use Paint. Any graphics editor should work. In PSP, just go to Edit > Paste As New Image... it's pretty easy.

From the moment you copy/drag/whatever it to Wordpad/Word/whatever it will loose the transparency anyway because it isn't copied as a alpha-blended PNG, but is treated as a solid meta-object.... hence I'm not for this method and prefer to directly copy the PNG file from my temporary files... ;)

printscreen photoshop paste saveforweb done...;)

even the transparency can be made with a little extra effort...

tbh, you never can get the original alpha-blending, unless you compare your trials with the original again and again until you have the right opacity for each pixel...and 255(?) possible opacities x 19 x 19 x the time you take to compare = VERY LONG.... So, again, nice trick, but it wont let you get the original with the original transparency...

(Is it that difficult to copy a file from a directory? lol)

* WDZ dunno... :^)

Are they stored in %appdata%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\xxxxxxxxxx\CustomEmoticons? That folder is empty right now, so I can't be sure... :dodgy: What format are they in? blahhh.dat like the other stuff? :P How do you identify which file you want?

I personally don't mind if the transparency doesn't match exactly 100 percent with the original one... it's good enough when the background is shown properly along with smooth edges of the emoticon...:)
