C:\Program Files\Xerox Doesn't want to delete! by Maniac on 07-18-2004 at 04:19 PM

I think this problem is self explanatory, i have this empty folder named "xerox" in my program files directory.... when i try to delete it i get a message saying i cannnot. I've been guetting this message several times but i found that using the TuneUp Utilities 2004 Shredder you can delete files however when i try to do the same with this folder i get a message saying one of its files is in a system folder... now i have no idea what this "xerox" is and it doesn't appear anywhere in add/remove programs, even more.... the folder contains only one folder... which is empty...

Is it safe to erase it and ignore the error message? :$

I believe this folder is to do with your printer drivers...and should not be deleted...
Edit: There are probably hidden files in the folder, go check

Weird.... i never had a xerox printer..... lol anyways i guess i'll delete it when i said it was empty it was eeeeempty (even hidden files)

Which reminds me.... I should get a printer someday and stop emailing my work to others for printing :dodgy:

I've noticed this problem on XP occasionally: it's usually gone after rebooting.

Just noticed it on mine too, and I can't delete it either...

actually, its built into windows....

:dodgy: microsoft.

quote:
This directory is created automatically when Windows XP is installed. As far as I can tell it serves no purpose, but there is no mention of it on microsoft.com, and you can delete it 'til you're blue in the face but it will come back each time. On the bright side, it's not a virus or spyware.

It will come back? hmmmm i guess i'll try it (btw to delete it you can't just use "delete" it won't work.... try the shredder i talked about above)

gah.... won't delete .... lol!

That folder is part of the WindowsImage Acquisition, and is used for scanning somehow...

In addition to "xerox", there is also a "microsoft frontpage" and a "msn gaming zone"-folder created each time you start Windows. Same thing, they are locked, so you can't delete them and they will be created each time you reboot.

There is a solution though. However, this is REALY NOT something to do when you don't know what exactly everything means and is. It is a RISKY thing todo if you don't know EXACTLY what you are doing... NOT FOR N00BS (sorry for the use of that word):

You can disable the Windows File Protection System (Windows 2000/XP) by following these instructions:
http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/disablesystemfilechecker.php
or
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/790/

Then, after you reboot, you are able to remove those folders. But be very carefull as disabling the WFP also removes the protection for critical system files and depending on your knowledge of windows this can be a good thing or a bad thing!!!

Best thing todo is leave those folders where they are, they don't harm you and are a part of Windows; It's not like they are the only folders on your HD that have no purpose (thinking of all the crap that accumelates over the years on a HD)...

;)

Well everything on my HD is there for a reason... i went through a massive clean out, looked in every little folder and reorganised everything... it took a LONG time but now my computer is neat :D

* Maniac wonders if he should do the same to his room
