Help - Networking with ZoneAlarm by cooldude_i06 on 08-11-2004 at 07:59 PM

I'm trying to confugure ZoneAlarm for my two pc home network. Ive been trying it for a while now and have reached no solution. I posted this at the ZoneLabs forum and received no help at all. If anyone here know a fix to this problem plz help, im desperate

Heres my post from ZoneLabs forum

OK i have a simple networking problem and i have looked for solution on the internet and nothing has helped.

I have two computers both with Windows XP and ZoneAlarm Security Suite 5.1, and ICF is disabled. THey are both connected to a hub with has internet uplink. They are both on the same workgroup. Both the computers can access the internet. But they cant fileshare nor can they ping each other. Ive tried adding various ip's, ip ranges and subnets to trusted zone set at low level, but still nothing. if i turn off zonealarm it all works nicely. I donot want to get rid of Zonealarm because its a great software. Can some one please help with this??????

also in the logs i get a message that Win32 Generic process from the other computer's ip was blocked, whe this shouldnt be happening because that ip is in the trusted zone.

My solution: don't use it :P Get Norton Anti-Virus and be done, in my experience, Zone Alarm is too constricting o.O

ive tried every possible firewall - norton, pc-cillin, mc-afee and in my opnion zonealarm is the best firewall out there (besides this problem :()

I said Norton Anti-Virus, not Norton Firewall. Just use NO firewall and use Norton Anti-Virus instead - it makes life a WHOLE LOT easier :mipdodgy:

that's off topic :dodgy:  but i think i can help.. i got the same problem in my network at home only with 3 computers (XP pro, xp home and win98)  all using zonealarm   and i found out you need to add each others IP's in zonealarm itself

here's my example:

you need to add a IP ADRESS so na IP range or something.. fill in the name from the person and the IP an trust it  after you did this to both computers   restart and it should work :)

thanks for the reply Twan, but the problem is that i have added the ips for each computer, even the subnets. lots of people have ips like urs, mostly same for each computer except the last part, but the ips of my computers are totally different, even the subnets different.

an you are absolutily sure that there isn't a Other firewall that is not turned off  like the firewall of your router or the XP firewall of some other firewall :S...

but i also didn't knew that IPS could be much different in the same network...

did you allready try to change the ips into something more the same like me ??  and what about different subnets   how can that be ?? :S (srry if that question is stupid)

there is no other firewall than zonealarm, not even ICF, and im 100% sure that its zonealarm beacuse without ZA everything runs fine. even i dont know why i have two subnet, i dont have a router, just a cheap hub, and i have a dsl connection from telus, they give u two diff ips

RE: Help - Networking with ZoneAlarm by Twan on 08-11-2004 at 09:33 PM

allright  than i'm srry i could help you...

i hope for you that some other person here will know it or they will help on the zonealram site because i don't know what you could do now :S:(:(

maybe instead of useing 2 ip addresses from telus you should go and buy a router. you can get a 4 port router with wireless for $50 canadian. it should make your internet problems easier to figure out (and connecting other devices seperatly becomes easier, for example ps2)

RE: Help - Networking with ZoneAlarm by .blade// on 08-11-2004 at 10:30 PM

Just in case you didn't know - Telus is static IP...you only get 1 IP o.O

RE: Help - Networking with ZoneAlarm by cooldude_i06 on 08-11-2004 at 10:33 PM

no blade, telus gives u 2 ips. and i might just have to end up buying a router, but routers usually bring more port problems :(
