msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by olle on 08-22-2004 at 10:25 PM

Had msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2. Get lockups with msn messenger since then. Windows messenger works. Have tried everything from testing other msn versions, reinstalling service pack, uninstalled messenger plus with sponsor program and msn, and tried to install msn again. Maybe this information can help someone here to figure it out?

it could possibly be that there may be conflict between MSN messenger and another program.

1) does MSN work on it's own without messenger plus?

2) have you tried uninstalling both MSN and messenger plus, and reinstalling them both again. (Install MSN messenger first, then Messenger plus)

3) Try using System Restore to go back to an earlier point in time when MSN and messenger plus functioned OK together.

If none of those work, you're best bet would be to contact Microsoft about the problem. It could be a possible bug.

Let me know if these steps fix your problem.

what exactly do u see?
do u have a message that pop ups? if so please tell us what it says
or
it just not responding when you are trying to open msn?
if so it could be a virus or smth

be more specific  ;)

RE: msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by olle on 08-23-2004 at 09:39 AM

1. Have tried both installing msn by itself and with messenger plus, without any effect.
2. Yes
3. I don't run windows XP, so it there a way to do system restore on win2k?
-----
When I try log in the messenger icon flashes as normal in the log in window, and after some seconds it stops and msn locks up and shows a error message like "Messenger have run into some problems and have to be shuted down". I can choose search for errors or close. When I press search for errors I get
msnmsgr.exe-Application Error
The instruction at "0x0047d996" referenced memory at "0x0013f000". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.
And a new message starts when I click Ok and I get a new error message
The instruction at "0x77f833e0" referenced memory at "0x6c8bd51b". The memory could not be "read".
And after that I click ok the next time msn disappears.
When I try restarting msn I get a message where I can choose to search for errors report to microsoft or not. And when I click search for errors this time a window with
Program error
msnmsgr.exe has generated errors and will be shutdown by Windows. You need to restart the program a error log is being created and I can only click on ok.

see CookieRevised's reply to Msn 6.2 crashes at startup - 0x0047479f
this should solve the problem of the known bug in 6.2...

RE: msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by olle on 08-23-2004 at 10:31 AM

When I go to that path
Open your registry editor (regedit), locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\PerPassportSettings

it don't show those keys MessageLoggingEnabled and
MessageLogPath. It only show a (default) string without a value

RE: msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by CookieRevised on 08-23-2004 at 11:03 AM

read the instructions again ;)

quote:
5. Then for each account (each number you see there) delete the following keys:
* MessageLoggingEnabled
* MessageLogPath

RE: msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by olle on 08-23-2004 at 11:12 AM

Have searched the whole registry file for those keys, they don't exist there. Maybe they was deleted earlier ago when i tried to remove all keys that contained "msnmessenger" and even When I try reinstalling msn those keys don't come up again.

RE: msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by CookieRevised on 08-23-2004 at 11:16 AM

* You don't need to search the whole registry... they are (normaly, in a healthy registry) under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\PerPassportSettings\<those ID numbers>

* It's a very bad idea to simply delete all the keys with "msnmessenger"!!!!

* To fix the mess, reinstall MSN Messenger 6.2, don't sign in yet or don't do anything else except following the instructions given in that link...

RE: msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by olle on 08-23-2004 at 11:34 AM

uninstalled msn, rebooted, installed msn without logging in, rebooted, looked at the registry file... no such keys, any other suggestions?

RE: msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by CookieRevised on 08-23-2004 at 12:56 PM

The keys should be there though... anyways, try to sign in now and take a screenshot if the error pops up again. Then attach the screenshot to a post here....

after that you could try:

RE: msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by olle on 08-23-2004 at 02:04 PM

This is the errors i got this time

RE: msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by CookieRevised on 08-23-2004 at 02:32 PM

Well, it still sounds like the bug I first mentioned....

But it could also be a bad memory module, but this is rather far fetched...

If anyone has another suggestion.... shoot

PS: olle, don't double post, it's not allowed ;)

I get something like that "Blah blah Memory could not be writen" thing with other programs. Well 1 day n then it was ok again...

RE: msn 6.1 +messenger plus, installed 6.2 by olle on 08-23-2004 at 03:02 PM

I think it's another bug, everything else works fine on my computer and also windows messenger. Can it be something with the ntvdm.exe file? I mean maybe msn login uses it to emulate 16 bit login?

>The napster: Have had this problem for some time

When will msn 6.3 be released?
