Halo 2 Cover Design Contest!
Well, after seeing the Half-Life 2 cover design contest, I decided to make my own Halo 2 cover design contest. I don't like the final Halo 2 cover image tbh...it looks too much like a cartoon. Anyways, go ahead and try your luck, I mean what more could you want? It's a Gmail invite and more!


RULES
- Entries will NOT be accepted unless they match these dimensions: front [355x500] - side [40x500] - back [355x500] (A template to make this easier can be found HERE)
- Entries MUST be for the XBOX version (Halo 2 is NOT comming out for PC)
- Entries MUST be posted in this thread
- Entries MAY be modified up to the closing date and time, entries modified after that will be disqualified.
- Entries will not be accepted after 11:59:59 PM forum time on September 9th 2004, and the contest winner will be revealed on September 13, 2004 (I am going to consider every entry very carefully ).
- The description on the back of the cover DOES count for extra Kudos
- The best format for entries is JPEG if hosted on these forums, or BMP if it is hosted on an outside server.
- All questions may be PM'd to me
- It would help greatly in delivering prizes if you could PM me your contact email
- All entries MUST contain some kind of graphic/concept art/depiction/screenshot from Halo 2. Resources can be found at:

Lastly: The template IS in .GIF format, but that is to keep the file size ultra low, I HIGHLY suggest you use .JPG, .JPEG, .BMP or .PNG format for entries (if hosted on the forums, I suggest .JPG or .JPEG.) The reason being that .GIF is a VERY low quality image.

im 18 by the way, been working in photoshop for five years just resently got photoshop cs but i made my cover with photoshop 7, just some tips for the rest of u guys cuz i keep seeing the same mistakes don't make ur cover one giant picture it looks very unprofessional cuz if u make a cover for a game ur trying to sell it right so ur gonna want to show wut all the game has wut it looks like and mainly all the best and coolest qualities of the game plus never over lap pictures unless on is either cut and the other has a BORDER, i know it might not seem cool or too much work but borders around pictures grabs peoples attention, plus don't croud the back or the front with too many pics like four pics on the back is plenty and depending on how u have every thing set up it can be too much, please use proper grammer when u r informing the viewer on the game and how the game is and write everything like ur trying to get someone to buy it that HASN'T play the first halo, another good tip that i really don't see that mainy people doing is evry picture u put on the back needs to have a caption, thats a big one u can'y just have random pics floating around with no meaning or purpose and pick pictures that show off something cool that the game has, and when u wite the copy block or the main writing part on the back (the place with the most writing) u don't really have to tell anyone how good the game is in this section the best thing u could do is give the most brief summary of the HALO 2 plot and nothing to do with halo 1 and something else look at the back of other games for references on how to set everything up properly and acuately, especialy when u want everything to be proportional to how it would really look like to make the bungie logo look too big on the front along with the "Mature" rating symbol and all the logos on the back u should just leave them plain if u can because that is the companys signature witch means don't put a glow around it or any thing thats about as professional as if Bill Gates' signautre and squigly lins and hearts around ok, leave the logos alone and if the logos u have aren't cut out CUT THEM OUT, lol unless ur lucky enough to find a transparent gif of the logo like i did, something else too DON'T USE THE HALO FONT to right out the info on the back it was made for the halo logo and thats don't use for anything but the logo, lol, try to find a very simply and very clear readable font to write out all the info, and really think about colors too like for instance black and white r probably the baest color for ur the font use to write the info not bright green or pink or any other color like that, u don't want to hurt the readers eyes, lol thus when it comes don't to it pick a nutural color like black or white its easier on the eyes.  thats all for me if any one needs tips just ask even though this is a contest it just really anoys the crap out of me to see people that complete RE-ARRANGE EVERYTHING on the back and everything is out of proportion to the actual thing, well im out...peace

Yes, I'm taking my time on this.

And an FYI for everyone: I've seen many covers with an ESRB rating of M for Blood and Gore and Violence. In fact, the real ESRB rating for Halo 2 is M for "Blood and Gore, Language, Violence." Although the ESRB also seems to think that Halo 2 came out on 7/8/2004.

nightspark, thats a pretty good one but i think theres too many pictures on the back plus they r ridiculously too small, lol good job though i like the layout overall

@ fhqwhgads if you are going to pick one to enter enter number three although it needs a little bit of tweaking as his front is too dark (a tiny bit brighter maybe) and that curved/squished text doesn't look so good......

Edit: and also put a little glow on the edges of the text (forgot what the photoshop word was)

i personally think that u should only be allowed one entry to me thats just common sence and all u guys that think u can win just by the fact that u have more pics or entries probably won't because when it comes down to it u did spend enough time on any of the entries at all i spent 2 days trying to get ever friggin detail into my entry even those little TM logo that everyone seems to be forgeting but is very important, and im not puting any one down im just giving some advice, justr keep working and every little detail but don't make it crouded.

I've just had a thought, My cover doesn't have all of the xbox stuff on it which it sort of should, but does it matter, because it still says xbox on it

well, think about it as if u made the game or had something to with the game, ur gonna want ur companies logo or at least some form of credit for taking part in the making of the game, and then all the other stuff at the bottom is nothing but leagal stuff like copy rights, ownerships, parterships, and warnings to anyone who rips off the company whether or not its bungie or microsoft that if the product is used personal gain by any one or if it damages the company no matter how small it is can land someone in court, and blah blah blah...well thats at least how i looked at it any way lol

very nice mecka i like it, not sure if u should have takin the scrolling image off of the bungie.net site but if u think about it if i was just a regular joe i wouldn't know wut the hell it is or wut its from, good job overall, i also like ur choice in fonts, im pretty sure looked for a duplicate from that ad, i know i did lol

Yeh i kinda thought about making up another texture or using a piece of black and white concept art faded out to 25% opacity but decided that the web page background would look nice.

The typeface I used on the back is the one used in the ad you used on your cover... its called Handel Gothic BT.

i think the hardest job here is not the graphic designers but the guy who has to choose them.. i could sit on this for hours and still not know who to choose.. Everyone has done a great job Better then microsoft of course .... You guys should take a career in graphic designing even though ur young its just an idea

traxor, you know you could always enter more than one cover as well, right? and it's not like everybody is posting the oversized covers in the thread anymore.

i gotta ask though, blade, is it possible for one person to win all three prizes - if three entries from that person won first, second and third? i suppose it would make prize delivery a little easier

insted of spending ur time on making 6 covers or as many as u want u prolly should have been spending all that time trying to make one awesome one when u thought u were making ur chances of winning better ur only making them weaker by doing this now if u wipe the slate clean and focus the rest of the time on one entry and actually think about how its gonna be set up even make a few serious sketches and look at other profession covers that r all ready made to help u out with ur next and/or final entry, good luck man, and to everyone else

This one tries to coordinate the colors on the front and back covers, although the same design elements I've used in all 3 entries are still the same. If you note:

1) All 3 entries have the smaller screenshots in a frame of some sort, with a text caption overlaying the image

2) The disclaimer and copyright information, barcode, ratings information and the various little logos never change position. I figured that realistically, thats where all the information would go anyway. I think they have regulations about that sort of stuff (i know they have regulations on placement and size of ratings logos - not sure what they are though).

3) Placement of the Halo 2 logos on the back cover never changes. This is purely because with all the other stuff on the back cover, where are you going to put a logo? Do you really need a huge logo on the back? I know I don't read the back of a game case without at least knowing the title of the game first.

Anyways, the cover image on this one is essentially the back cover of the Halo 2 Deluxe Limited Collectors edition or whatever its called. The only difference between that and the artwork that has been released to the public is that it's in colour. This image took me goddamn ages in photoshop to colour, but the results are great. I wish bungie would release a cityscape or two into their wallpapers section.. i mean, we've seen some vague glimpses of Earth City and New Mombasa in videos and concept art, but never a detailed illustration or render of the city.

Also tried something a little different with the frame here.

For future reference, the image of the Covenant cruiser was not taken from anything on the internet or in a magazine. Its the bottom of the Truth and Reconciliation, captured with Fraps over about 2 hours for every little detail. I've got the image on my hard drive to prove it.

This one is markedly different from the other two, because it does away with the black spine, using one large image to cover both the front and back cover. Keep in mind that the cruiser on the back is much much larger in the original image, but scaled back here to fit on the back cover.

I've also included a shot of a warthog (its a bit distorted tho). The strange thing about the back cover is that it has 2 feature shots, the large one of the chief on the left and the hog on the right

I had a few friends ask me how I got the shadow underneath the warthog. I duplicated the layer with the hog on it in photoshop, free transformed/distorted/skewed the image so it looked a little bit more realistic, and then applied a gaussian blur to it.

On a final note - I had a really hard time getting all my text readable on the cover. 750 x 500 pixels is not much room to get a lot of readable text in. The workaround I used involved using Illustrator and Photoshop. I typed up the text in Illustrator, imported it into photoshop at a much larger size, then shrank it down using the "bicbuic smoother/sharper" commands under resize image. It made all the difference. I used the same trick with the ratings, bungie and microsoft logos. I downloaded all of the logos in EPS format off the internet (they are free for public use). The bungie logo was ripped from the Halo PDF manual (its on the front cover). The logos are much sharper than the gif and jpeg ones you can download off a website, plus they have transparent background so no more stuffing around with jagged pixelly edges.

Here is my final cover. I hope you guys like it.

I updated my entry posts on the previous page with additional information about my designs and how I went about creating them. Its got a bit of technical mumbojumbo thats not for everybody (I think), but I hope that some people will learn a little as well.

I may have written a little too much, but hey, I love talking about my work and besides, I'm showing off a little
