I didnt think you could do this but i saw one of my contacts do it and with other emails aswell as gmail (e.g user@isp.com) Just wondering how this is done?

go to http://www.passport.net and register your @gmail, @isp or @anything for a net passport. you can then sign in msn with that email

Is it possible to get a toast (or whatever it's called
) in messenger when you recive mail at your gmail account?

no its not possible by its self !!!!
however you can install "pop gos the gmail" which will make your g,mail have pop3 access. You can then set up messenger plus! to check your gmail account !
