Can't receive file transfers by hodunwun on 09-05-2004 at 06:32 PM

Have sp2 installed and cannot recieve file transfers into Messenger.   Note that sp2 changes xp firewall.  Even with Messenger check marked to let it through, I still cannot recieve files.  Can someone give me quick fix for this please? Or isn't there any?  Maybe someone can send me to repair file on the net.  Thanks for your attention.

you could disable windows firewall, and see if that allows you to transfer files

Thanks for the quick reply.  I tried disabling the firewall. No go. Still can't recieve files.  Any other ideas?

That excludes the firewall. You'll probably find a direct transfer can't happen because of NATs, and the via-server transfer doesn't work because the server is loaded.
So, nothing you can do really, and no quickfix either.

Turn it back on!

Anyway, I just checked mine, and it lists 'MSN Messenger 6.2'. Ensure that option is checked.

No other firewalls.  But maybe in the router but that wouldn't make any difference cause it was working before with the router and I didn't change anything with the router.  I think it was sp2 that changed the firewall settings and nats maybe.  I just noticed that I am running Windows Messenger and not MSN Messenger.  Suppose there are any differences?  Also maybe there is an update for Windows Messenger.  I am running version 4.2.  I'll check for a later version.  Have you guys installed sp2?   And if so, have you had any trouble with Windows Messenger?8-|

There are lots of differences:

4.2 doesn't exist anymore... you proberly mean 4.7... But that isn't the full version of Windows Messenger! It's either 4.7.2009 or 4.7.3000, but since you have SP2, it will be 4.7.3000. And that means you also can have problems with various things as 4.7.3000 isn't exactly a decent update to 4.7.2009... See http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=30...d=300796#pid300796

You wont find a newer version for Windows Messenger then 4.7.3000, as that is the latest one. Instead I suggest you to downgrade!!! (for above reasons)... see http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=30...d=301185#pid301185

Thanks Cookie for all the info.  Yes, I meant win messenger 4.7. And yes it is 4.7.3000 after sp2 install.  I see where sp2 may be denying some transfers.  I think I follow what you are saying about going back a version to 4.7.2009.  I will charge through it tomorrow.  What does 'SIP' refer too?
Thanks,
Doug    (Y)

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a text-based protocol, similar to HTTP and SMTP, for initiating interactive communication sessions between users. Such sessions include voice, video, chat, interactive games, and virtual reality. It's another way of communicating which Windows Messenger can use. It's "only" "usefull" for companies.
