Stats: What countries our members are from by WDZ on 09-07-2004 at 03:56 AM

I took all the users who posted here in the last week, used their IPs to determine what countries they're from, and made some stats. :p

Country Name - User Count - Percentage

United Kingdom  71  22%
Canada          54  17%
United States   44  14%
Netherlands     28  9%
Australia       23  7%
Belgium         14  4%
France          12  4%
Spain            8  2%
Portugal         7  2%
New Zealand      6  2%
Argentina        6  2%
India            4  1%
Mexico           4  1%
Sweden           4  1%

Well, I wrote some PHP scripts to help me, of course. :p

I'm gonna generate some more stats from different sets of data after tweaking my scripts a bit...

Australia       14  6%
Spain            8  3%
Belgium          8  3%
Mexico           7  3%

BTW, they're not necessarily language stats, because they're based on IP addresses.

What about basing some more on browser language? :P And as suggestion... post count per country or something?

The Netherlands are smaller and have less people... but still are above Australia!!! :cheesy:

RE: Stats: What countries our members are from by CookieRevised on 09-07-2004 at 09:47 AM

You know what is interesting...
Put The Netherlands and Belgium together (to get dutch speaking people) and they are always right after the English speaking bunch. And mind you that "Belgium and Netherlands" is only a very small dot compared to "USA + UK + Canada + Australia" (english speaking part)

So, GO Dutchies (y).....

(maybe we should start Dutch threads more often, like the Spanish people do :P)

"To TaKe OvEr ThE WoRlD"
<Pinky and the Brain tune playing now>

PS: Mippo was faster in noticing :P

RE: Stats: What countries our members are from by Omar on 09-07-2004 at 05:08 PM

well...the only thing that comes to mind is...

How much time does people from those countries spend logged in to the forums....?

But the UK is a 'very small dot' compared to the USA, and were still first, so thats no excuse

RE: Stats: What countries our members are from by user27089 on 09-07-2004 at 05:39 PM

You see, this is why we have a messed up server load, it really annoys me when people just make a user and never post, its just annoying..  or have multiple users.

That would require some extra logging... it seems kinda useless too. :p

quote:

O_o

I'm not sure how that would work... the average post count of users from each country? That would require finding out the country for every registered user, which would probably kill my PC. :p

That would be cool, but once again, the data isn't available. I'd have to set up special logging for it.

Nah, I don't think so. It would be kinda server-intensive. :dodgy:

Anyway, the stats probably won't change much... :-/
RE: Stats: What countries our members are from by saralk on 09-07-2004 at 06:32 PM

how about the same posting results, but only for T&T?

They may well change: many people are still in holydays and ca have not connected as much as they would do anytime. So I'd suggest to print that stats again in a month or so to see if they've changed.

Just an idea ;)

You know, I once had the idea of finding that out for the common posters (of course, I don't have the IP's to check, so it would be via PM or something) and putting dots on a world map. I thought it would be nice to see the "image"....

It is, because there are about 16 million Dutch people and 60 million from the UK. :P

Edit: I saw Belgium and the Netherlands are apart, so only 16 million people!
RE: Stats: What countries our members are from by fluffy_lobster on 09-08-2004 at 06:52 PM

Out of interest, how do you define an american? Because the .com, .net and .org tld's are hardly american-only; I believe my connection is .com

RE: Stats: What countries our members are from by WDZ on 09-08-2004 at 06:59 PM

It's based on IP, not hostname. :p

All IPs are registered to some organization, that's based in some country, and the records are publically available.

RE: Stats: What countries our members are from by saralk on 09-08-2004 at 07:25 PM

T&T is pruned too often to get accurate data, IMO. :p
