New e-mail notification when there's no new mail. by viceroy on 09-08-2004 at 08:51 PM

Howdy. I've been having this weird problem where the new e-mail notification keeps popping up when no new e-mail is received in my two POP3 accounts. The number of new e-mails it shows keeps going up with every actual new e-mail I get. For instance, right now it says that I have 8 mails in one account and 2 in the other, and this is days after I had already read them.

I've tried eveything from reinstalling msgplus, reinstalling my mail client, using TweakUI to reset the unread mail count, and uninstalling both msgplus and my mail client then using TweakUI to reset the mail count. But nothing seems to work, and frankly, I'm at a loss.

Sooo, Any ideas?

I'm using:

Windows XP Pro SP2
Latest MSN Messenger
Latest MsgPlus
Mozilla Thunderbird E-mail client

Thanks in advance!

Have you deleted the messages/moved them to a different folder? If they are still in your inbox, that may be the problem, as some POP3 servers report the total number of e-mails, not the number of unread.

Yeah, I've moved them from the inbox to a different folder and it didn't change anything. Also, It wouldn't be a problem with the server because it didn't do this until recently.

Any other ideas?

maybe you're interested in the last part of this post:

Other then that, I don't know what the problem might be... It should return the correct number if you only have unread mails in your inbox.

Ok, I figured it out. Turns out it was the mail server. The thing is that I had told my client to leave all messages on the server a couple days ago and it was, as you said, reporting the total number of emails.

Thanks for your help.
