Browser-wars:
The mozilla menace

The army of the IE Old Republic must fight against the Fire Fox and the Thunder Bird which are putting the old civilisation in danger. Some rebel factions of the universe have joined the action of these ancient monsters. Their purpose: Respawning the archimonster of the hell: Mozilla who was converted into a Gecko during an Opera by a spell from the Mystic Konkerors.

RE: Your favorite web browser? by WDZ on 09-24-2004 at 02:14 PM

I like Opera, though I haven't tried FireFox. I started using Opera back before Mozilla/FireFox was so popular, and I'm very happy with it, so I see no reason to switch. (y)

IE is all right... I don't hate it as much as some people do. I've never had real problems with it, and I still use it occasionally for testing stuff.

One main reason I don't use IE is because it lacks many features that are necessary for "power users" like me. I suppose something like Avant could add those features, but I've never tried that either. :p

Firefox is THE best. It has everything IE has (well, not counting security problems :D) and more. Tabbed browsing, built-in downlaod manager, themes, extensions... http://www.getfirefox.com

RE: Your favorite web browser? by BiZaRrE on 09-24-2004 at 04:13 PM

The fact that IE exists isn't a problem. It's actually an Ok browser. The problem is that most people believe it to be The Internet (they didn't even know there was a word like.. browser..). The problem with this is that, Microsoft dominates the web. Meaning, if MS decides that CSS is bull; and stops support for it, or decides that CSS3 isn't to their likings, and don't implement it, then CSS3 will die. And the fact that one company dominates this market, causes the web to be the trashcan it is right now.

Don't play smart lad. For one, how on earth can you say Firefox is the best when you haven't even tried a decent share of other browsers. Sure it's better than IE on most basises. But most browsers are. Those things you said are supported by a wide range of other browsers, including Opera, which, I don't think, you tried. You are what is the consequence of ignorant and blind browser wars.

A browser each, everybody has his/her taste. That's my opinion, but keep the web universal and stick to the rules. If you can't do that, then bugger of. No browser should ever dominate it. Be it a very good one or a very lame one. Domination always causes shit to happen.

I tried Opera a while ago. Well, I guess you are right, Opera has changed a lot after that so I guess it's pretty equal with Firefox (I can't imagine that it would be lightyears afead of Firefox). I actuelly ditched Opera because at that time I tought that IE was better. My friend has Opera, and according to him there are many small things that I would find annoying. Bah, I was wrong, you were right. As always :-#

I tend to use Avant Browser more than any other, simply because it's what I'm used to, but I've got a few others installed too.  Opera is but one.

RE: Your favorite web browser? by user27089 on 10-05-2004 at 07:18 PM

I always used to love Internet explorer, for a while i tried Opera, i liked it, but that was back when I was into all of the mac osx themes, and thats just like what opera is like, after a while, I went back to using Internet Explorer, then stigmata came round and persuaded me to use Mozilla Firefox, and now its all i use :)

My favourite browsers are Avant Browser and Opera even though i have no problems with IE.

Well, the reason is that IE is (sortof) already started when Explorer is started (Explorer is Windows' window manager, desktop and taskbar, in short). IE uses many parts of Explorer thus loading much faster.
Firefox runs quickly if you don't have extensions installed (obviusly).

Similar to MSIE, there is Konqueror from KDE desktop environments (Linux), that is used to browse files and internet, but is really good. it has things like the download speed on the statusbar no other browser (that I knew) has. It's also a good choice if you *escaped* from Windows.

I wonder if one could build Konqueror for Windows... :rolleyes:
RE: Your favorite web browser? by CookieRevised on 10-06-2004 at 09:08 AM

I use mainly good old stable Netscape (also from Mozilla family, but without the bugs :D) without the AOL stuff...

Like everybody else, I also still use IE  (eg: windows update, some ie-specific sites (although Netscape can handle them mostly with a nice small userAgent-plugin), and like someone said, sometimes I keep on browsing when I'm in IE anyways)

RE: Your favorite web browser? by Idium on 10-23-2004 at 08:03 PM

I use Firefox all the way

RE: Your favorite web browser? by .Roy on 10-23-2004 at 08:17 PM

i always used ie 6 but then i decided to try opera because people said it was good so i tried it...

it was running slow for me and it had so many confusing buttons and i didn't know which one to press..

then i switched bak to ie 6 and stayed that way.. But then someone in this forum told me to try firefox so i did and i love it.. Already a month i think :-P

I love all of its useful extensions.. Very user friendly..

IE, firefox and opera

RE: Your favorite web browser? by rav0 on 05-23-2005 at 09:03 AM

Opera all the way!

Have used Mozilla Something-or-other (?), Mozilla FireFox, Netscape classic (v1-v4?), new Netscape (v7.0+?), Internet Explorer(v3-v6), Aerobrowser (v?) (RIP :'(), Opera (v6?-v8).

Opera affiliate links:P [/plug]

RE: Your favorite web browser? by saralk on 05-23-2005 at 09:41 AM

I use Opera, have used it for a while now, since version 5 (back then skins were around 1MB :p). And I really like it.

Keystorm - With opera, you can have the download speed in the status bar ;)

RE: Your favorite web browser? by FrozernFire on 05-23-2005 at 09:48 AM

firefox :banana:

RE: Your favorite web browser? by gif83 on 05-23-2005 at 09:57 AM

At the moment i'm using Maxthon which is basically IE with extra facilities (tabbed browsing for example). One of the advantages of this is that websites that tend only to work for IE work on Maxthon just as well.

RE: Your favorite web browser? by linx05 on 05-23-2005 at 10:25 AM

I use Maxthon. Has some of the best plugins I've seen. I have tried Firefox, Opera and Avant. Along with some other IE shells.

I just haven't gotten use to the way Opera and Firefox works. Maxthon has everything I need and more!

I found out there's a nice extension that adds that to FF, too ;)

RE: Your favorite web browser? by Zephyr on 05-23-2005 at 10:33 AM

I've been using Firefox for quite a while now after switching from IE. I haven't tried any others, but Firefox is great, no problems with it at all. Tabbed browsing is so much easier, plus some of the extensions available are so useful. I use the mouse gestures extension so much, to go back for example, you hold the right mouse button and drag left. When i use IE at school, i'm always dragging my mouse to the left to go back.

I would definitely recommend Firefox. I find it easy to use and it's just a great browser.

RE: Your favorite web browser? by mwe99 on 05-23-2005 at 10:42 AM

Although I do have FireFox and Internet Explorer, I tend to use Internet Explorer, I think it's just a habit to click on the IE logo.

RE: Your favorite web browser? by user35870 on 05-23-2005 at 11:01 AM

My main one is firefox.

RE: Your favorite web browser? by Purity on 05-23-2005 at 05:31 PM

Maxthon, i've been using it for awhile now, it use to be called IE2.

It's awsome, has a built in ad blocker and popup blocker....

Tabbed browsing, click drag functions, undo button.  It's awsome. :cheesy:

RE: Your favorite web browser? by sparks on 05-23-2005 at 05:34 PM

Firefox for me nowadays, used to be an addict to Opera until somehow it crapped out on me :s

btw...firefox :grin:

Firefox rules (Y)

If everyone got to choose their browser that they get with their OS.. Firefox would win.

But unfortunately, IE comes with Windows :P

Firstly tabbed, browsing i couldn't live without. There is so much spyware out there attacking through IE and with Firefox there isn't. The customisation of Firefox is amazing if you like that sort of thing. Downladable themes and extensions, for which there is an extension for every tool you can think of (maybe).
RE: Your favorite web browser? by Shezi on 05-23-2005 at 08:17 PM

sticked with opera sinces ages... ;)

RE: Your favorite web browser? by Rik on 05-23-2005 at 08:35 PM

I've been using IE since i have internet but some months ago i downloaded FF ,i didn't liked (the tabed windows were cool) and i'm with IE again
i just use FF to copy .gif images and to see pages source code:)

I've been using IE for ages now and firefox hasn't convinced me not tiny bit to switch to it... I never have any problems with IE - the (startup)speed is a lot faster than FF (since IE is integrated into windows and uses same shell as explorer), neither any safety issues...
RE: Your favorite web browser? by saralk on 05-24-2005 at 10:11 AM

to be honest, the security problems in IE are overrated, unless you are going to go on dodgy russian porn sites, and click every link you are ever given, there is no reason for viruses to be installed on your system.

nah not viruses just spyware, ad aware, malware and all that stuff that slows down your PC.

I find a combination of firefox and zonealarm are a mix which stops all that.

I agree with saralk, also if you set up all IE's activex and cookie settings properly you wont have much of a problem<i>

you know what i meant.

People only get malware because they click yes to every popup they see. The only reason you don't get them in Firefox is because they are disabled. Which is a stupid way of saying that its more secure. When germany was split into the east and west. The Russians could say "look, no-one is leaving east-germany, we are so great", when the only reason they weren't leaving was because they couldn't.
RE: Your favorite web browser? by Chris.1 on 05-24-2005 at 10:57 AM

Yay! Another browser war thread... just what this forum needs.

I use FireFox - it works, doesn't crash my computer, has tabbed browsing, is cross-platform compatible (I use Linux and Windows) and has lots of extensions and plugins. Not the mention the security.

Internet Explorer plain sucks. The free version of Opera is ad supported (and I don't like the way it works anyway) and when I used Netscape it didn't display webpages nicely.

This thread isn't a browser war (yet) and wasn't intended to. It is to state your favorite browser, not to discuss which browser is best.... If someone states he likes his textbrowser from 1995 best then fine, end of discussion.....

And talking about old stuff:

Netscape 6 is extremely old. In those days FF wasn't even a decent piece of software so to speak... Also, Netscape, Mozilla, FF all do use the same engine (sort of)...

RE: Your favorite web browser? by Lou on 05-25-2005 at 11:51 PM

I sue firefox.....used to use IE but found that if you wanted to download things it could auto download something else without you knowing...therefore endangering your computer's health.

RE: Your favorite web browser? by Caboose on 05-26-2005 at 01:55 AM

I prefer Firefox for its wide array of extensions & themes, it's RSS compatible (that thing is GOD (not literally, but you know)) and all around it's a really great browser :)

RE: Your favorite web browser? by Concord Dawn on 05-26-2005 at 03:22 AM

Firefox for it's unending amount of customizability. I find that the startup time is not that much slower than IE, but since I have so many plugins my startup time is slower. But then again, I also use the Litestep shell, so IE isn't preloaded when I boot (since explorer isn't loaded when I boot).

RE: Your favorite web browser? by SikStyles on 05-26-2005 at 03:25 AM

FF all the way!..altho in some cases i use a little IE too but mostly FireFox cuz its fast..i tweaked it a little by changing the send request numbers in about:config

this browser just works for me
i suggest it to everyone

RE: Your favorite web browser? by John Anderton on 05-26-2005 at 05:00 AM

Not another browser war :P

Ok here is the lowdown ....

I was a normal IE user who had 1 prob which was that my pc would get slow due to IE :-/

I made a poll here to c whats the major browser and i found that ff was
no. 1 and IE was a distant 2nd and opera was even further away in 3rd
.... not many avant users and all :)

So i switched to FF and i have never looked back .... its fast (not too
much ram consumption) and has pretty nice features like the bookmarks
bar :

That's the strongest reason I've seen so far. Well done! BTW it loads fast because it is always loaded because of shell integration.

Ya but IE is a bit outdated ... i mean outdated in its features. It has only basic features while the new gen browsers have extra stuff that make them more user friendly and attractive :)

Sometimes you dont need lots of features, its a web browser to browse webpages. You dont NEED tabs, you dont NEED all the extra features, there just handy :P

I downloaded Deer Park 1 Alpha its pretty good (y)

I never have had any problem Opera and JavaScript (or anything else), except "copy to clipboard". "Copy to clipboard" isn't real JavaScript, is Microsoft proprietary code that looks like JavaScript.
RE: Your favorite web browser? by -dt- on 05-28-2005 at 05:29 AM

well I use firefox because of its extenibility , its speed and its evergrowing support for standerds also i love userscripts.
I know opera has userscripts too which look pretty good I havnt really played around with them much but it seems they give the coder more power so that they could fix the pages insted of just adding new fetures to that webpage and kinda fixing them using greasemonkey (a userscript loader for firefox).
I spose what draws me to firefox more than opera is that I can change anything within the browser using extentions, having more controll over my browser.

you can enable copy to clipboard by putting one of the two things bellow into your user.js

To enable for all sites
code:
user_pref("capability.policy.default.Clipboard.cutcopy","allAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.default.Clipboard.paste", "allAccess");

to enable for specific sites
code:
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.cutcopy", "allAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.paste", "allAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "SitesHere aSpaceDefinesNewSite");
user_pref("capability.policy.policynames", "allowclipboard");

My favourite web Browser has to be Mozilla Firefox, merely beause of it's great skinnable interface, it's speed, it's accessability and how user friendly it is.

I switched to Firefox a few months back to give it a go after hearing good things about it. I would never go back to IE after using it- there is nothing IE has that firefox doesn't, popup blocker is very good, and I like the tabbed browsing a lot. :)

I do find it to be a bit faster too, yeh.

you can enable copy to clipboard by putting one of the two things bellow into your user.js

To enable for all sites
code:
user_pref("capability.policy.default.Clipboard.cutcopy","allAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.default.Clipboard.paste", "allAccess");

to enable for specific sites
code:
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.cutcopy", "allAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.paste", "allAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "SitesHere aSpaceDefinesNewSite");
user_pref("capability.policy.policynames", "allowclipboard");

Will this, or is there a way to, only allow sites clipboard access when it is user initiated. Damn, I hope I'm not putting ideas into people's heads. Damn, I shouldn't have said that.

I like IE6 by far; I think it looks nicer and its right in Windows.  And I prefer its image handling and browsing engine.

*rav0 thinks again about making a true IE lookalike skin for Opera

Although I don't think this will be reason enough to make you switch browsers, Opera lets you make your own inbuilt search engines. I have Google Suggest Australia/Opera added.

*rav0 thinks for the first time about making a true Firefox lookalike skin for Opera. When I use Firefox, it seems to be slower than Opera, but maybe it is because Firefox use it less often.

There is no browser other than Internet Explorer that supports Windows Update (Microsoft Update).

ActiveX is a Microsoft-patented technology. That is why it is not in Firefox, Opera, Konqueror or any other browser. Well, Microsoft kind of stole the patent, but that's besides the point ATM.

Windows Update (Microsoft Update) is ActiveX based, and needs to be, so that it can change your system files. I explained above why ActiveX isn't in Firefox.
