Is your windows installer up to date?

and what Windows version are you using?
If that is Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME then install the latest windows installer from here first:

If that is Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 then install the latest windows installer from here first:

Windows XP. With SP 2!

Then you have Windows Installer v3.0... this is an brand new updated version of the previous one. Maybe there is some bug with it....

but

Have tried to redownload MSN Messenger and install that? Also, did you download and install the correct version of MSN Messenger? The one for XP (you can download several versions for several OS's)?

I have the exact problem as you. (running Windows XP Pro SP2) I've tried doing msiexec /unreg and msiexec /regserver in Run, disabling the Temp folder's EPS, renaming the x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.Dxmrtp... and x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.RtcDll... folders in %windir%/WinSxS, removing the MSNMessenger string from regedit, and deleting all temp files. The MSN Messenger I downloaded is the correct version. I've even used various browsers to download the installer just in case it was corrupted. Nothing has worked so far.
It's strange, though. I've been using MSN Messenger for years and this is the first time that I have seen this error. I'm beginning to think that this is a bug with v6.2. (I'm not sure if I used 6.1 or 6.2 before this. Anyone know when 6.2 was released?)

Depends on what you mean. The very first build? I dunno anymore, months and months ago :p The latest build (6.2.0137) is from June 8th '04...

----

Anyways, this is something I've found on the web. It's a small registry fix which will fix the installer, note that this is/was meant to be for Windows Installer 2.0 and I think that it does nothing more then what /unreg and /regserver will do. (not sure about that though) It _could_ work for Windows Installer 3.0 I guess.

NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT IN DOING THIS IF YOU ARE NOT 100% FAMILIAR WITH WHAT YOU ARE DOING!

Before you try, make a backup of the following registry key first. If things go wrong (or it doesn't work) you can revert to you old settings as if nothing has happend:

Export this registry key to a file:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
And export this registry key to a file:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer

After that you can safely run the attached registry file.

----

What you also can (almost must) do is file a bugreport to the MSN Messenger team:

http://support.msn.com/contactus_emailsupport.asp...oductkey=messenger
And under "What type of problem do you have?" you select: "I need something fixed" | "Download" | "System Errors". Also don't forget to give very detailed info in the big box, especially the full error message, your complete MSN Messenger version number (thus 6.2.something) and that you have XP SP2.
