USB Disk Problem by Phazeus on 10-02-2004 at 03:05 PM

Hi guys. I'm having a problem here. I cannot format my USB disk drive, because apparently Windows cannot do it. I hope the attachment will explain it all. I get the first pic if I try to open the disk drive. Then when I click "Yes", I get the 2nd options. I've tried both FAT and FAT32 File formats for formatting, and I tried checking and unchecking the "Quick Format" options. But apparently both don't work. Anyone can help? Thanks :)

EDIT: Oh by the way, I did Google, and all I got was that Norton AntiVirus may not allow the formatting of secure disks, whatever that means. So I did disable Norton AV, but I still can't format my disk.

Does your USB disk provide special drivers/format utilities for you to format the disk? Also, what disk drive are you using? ;)

Hmmm... no. It's a Kurebi thumbdrive. 128mb, if thats important haha... I've tried searching for this brand on the net, but can't find any info. Still can't format... and I thought windows format should work for all USB thumbdrives...

It should, indeed; have you got any chance to try to format your drive on other computers? :)

If the drive uses the USB Mass Storage device driver.

Yups, it does. (The pop-up bubble says so) Anyway the packaging did say the thumbdrive does not require any additional drivers if the OS is above Win98.
Oh yar, I did try on a WinME laptop (which is rubbish anyway). The thumbdrive is inserted, and a "local disk blah blah" appears in "My Computer". However, when I click the icon, the laptop hangs. (Not surprisingly... the laptop hangs often enough)
Anyone has any idea why I can't fomat it? Thanks :)
