Have you checked to see if they're plugged in right? Have you had them blasting really loud recently?

You mean ticking as in clipping when they play high volume sound?  Try adjusting the levels at the various stages in the output process.  If turning the speakers down stops the ticking then it's your dodgy speakers that can't cope.  If not then try turning down the master volume on your PC - the sound card might not be able to take the level of sound that is being fed to it.  If not, the mixer can still clip if one of the inputs is too high.  Open up the Volume Control utility and try turning down some secondary levels - most often wave or CD for music.

Wanna buy me some new speakers? :P  Mine are so badly shielded... the turning of the fans in the pc box next to them makes feedback a little (or a lot if you plug in headphones) :P
