msgplus news letter...? by marissa on 10-24-2004 at 08:02 PM

Well i guess this can be in MsgPlus General Talk...okay, well, it was awhile a go when someone came on irc and asked me about something, and im like "yeah, thats a good idea." and then i just read bach_m's thread about the tip of the day thing...so guest27 had placed the idea in my mind, and now maybe i can put it in your minds aswell :p Its a msgplus news letter...? Someone i talked to about it said it would be hard work, and hard to maintain, but i still think its a good idea...I know it'll prolly get shot down from other users, so ill make a poll. I did some research on an emailing system, but im sure theres better ones out there. It might not even be able to get started if no one likes the idea, but who knows, maybe you'll all like it. Id be happy to work with it, because it could have a lot of info for the users.
like...
-when an updates been released
-a link to the change log for msgplus
-a tip for each news letter (from bach_m's system of course, it was his idea)
- personal messages from patchou (if wanting to)
- anything really. if this gets put into play, im sure anyone can have say of what goes on in it...

anyways, dont be shy to shoot down the idea :) it'll probably be up to patchou anyways =p

Edit: and if this has been requested before, sorry  i searched and didnt find anyting.

EDIT2 - sorry, edited the poll to see who doesnt want this, i just wanna know why :p sorry

Yeh if people can't accsess the forum for some reason (maybe be banned or summit) there still can be up to date with the plus happenings and you can give big ups to people for doing certain things I like this idea I bet others would too.

RE: msgplus news letter...? by bach_m on 10-24-2004 at 08:19 PM

I think thats a great idea! I've never seen it requested in my nearly 2 yrs here...

My thread, which marrissa talked about: New Site: Messenger Plus! Daily Tip

RE: RE: msgplus news letter...? by Guido on 10-25-2004 at 12:42 AM

Its not like that many people are permanently banned...

It's been requested several times around the time when Plus! 2 was released.

The "newsletter" functionality already exists built in right in the forums... people just have to register and go here:

http://shoutbox.menthix.net/usercp2.php?action=subscribe&fid=2

to suscribe to the Announcements & News forum: they'll get an e-mail whenever important news happens.

However, now that I think of it... this should be mentioned in the website, as a "Messenger Plus! Newsletter". It's already there, we just have to publicize it. Patchou, if you are reading this, what do you think? (I'll gladly do the extra page)

Great idea, I agree with Guido that maybe a link to subscribe to the announcements forum should be somewhere :)

But doesn't people need to sign up for the forums first then?
(defeating the purpose of a simple subscribtion to a "mailinglist")

Yeah... and I don't really want people registering just to subscribe to a forum... :p

Also, the board shouldn't be sending out large numbers of e-mails all at once... :^)

at first, im opposed to this idea. but when i think about it more, im starting to like it. The downside is obvious that it's going to take a lot of spare time out of whoever is willing to commit to this project.

I voted i dont care because it would be a nice feature but its going to create more work for patchou or whoever else would be managing this list.

Well there's loads of mailing services out there...and many of them just require a simple login, if it was all set up the responsibilities could be shared...it could all be worked out and managed and then reviewed by one person and sent...That way about 10 people could do it and the hassle wouldn't be to much...I know if it was set up like that there's loads of members here that would love to do something like that, I know I would so I'm sure there's loads that feel the same way...
RE: msgplus news letter...? by Pyroteq on 10-25-2004 at 09:43 AM

I wouldnt mind doing it but it would involve alot of communication with patchou and the admins/mods/plugin developers e.t.c But if someone wants to set it all up and take the effort then id love to see it.
In the end its really down to what patchou thinks of the idea, its his program, and he will be the one who will be submitting the most important news to the newsletter.

its a waste of time having a such thing emailed out. when people can just come to the  website en read the News etc about Plus
RE: msgplus news letter...? by Sunshine on 10-25-2004 at 10:35 AM

I voted no because it would be a real hassle (even though the idea is nice but we have to keep real), too many ppl making plugins etc. if you wanna include that too. You don't have to have one to get notified when there's a new version of plus! released...that's what the autoupdate/update notification is for.

everyone doesnt coem to the forums and msgplus site everyday to read the news. Thats why i also thought this would be a good idea...it could be like the bulldog newsletter (if any of you get it) That informations on their site too, but it still gets sent out to everyone just to remind them.

but anyways...it'll probably be up to patchou like i said before :^)

Blah :P its not like there will be millions of suscribers... plus there are no more than 2 articles per month.

Well.. unless we implement a news system in msgplus.net that automatically sends newsletters when Patchou adds an article, then I'm afraid no one will do this :P Then again, last time I tried to implement a CMS for the news @ msgplus.net, he ended up editing the html in notepad :gfdrin:

Developers developers developers developers...

RE: msgplus news letter...? by Twan on 10-26-2004 at 04:34 AM

you can come to the site to read the news ( there isn't that many news) ,  when you have the msgplus tab you can see the news..  so for me there is no reason to have a newletter.,, :S
