How does windows xp sp2 work with wireless?

RE: xp sp2? by bach_m on 10-25-2004 at 01:45 AM

Well, they brought in this Wireless Zero Config, which automatically jums on the strongest open connection. great idea, huh? well actually, it drops the connection its on, so if u dont have another connection, ur left without a connection.

It can be disabled in the services menu

Right Now I have a wireless conection to my cable internet does that mean it will work or not?

RE: xp sp2? by bach_m on 10-25-2004 at 02:03 AM

It'll work. But sometimes it will drop the connection (i assumed u were talking about wifi, 802.11). the service can be disabled

Well right now it drops the connection sometimes because I assume I have other devices on the same frequency.  My biggest concern is that my internet won't work or my Windows XP os won't work but I can always back up all my stuff.

You internet will work with XP SP2, I can confirm this because I have used it with a wireless laptop. DO NOT disable the Wireless Zero Configuration service. This will stop you from getting ANY wireless internet connection.

That's good.  Should I do anything else before I upgrade to sp2?

RE: xp sp2? by Concord Dawn on 10-25-2004 at 02:17 AM

Yeah, back up all your important stuff and pray.

Yeah, probably. When I installed SP2, the first reboot took a long time, but all subsequent boots were normal. (y)

Yeah, but I once encountered the problem that the boot took a very long time.
I think either Matty or EvilSeph or someone mentioned this.

The first long boot would be quite normal. It is part of the install process; only after a reboot certain things can be installed/set up....

Other then that, I had also a fear of upgrading to SP2 after reading all these negative reports on the net. Well, I must say, it went as smooth as a baby's bottom....

XP SP2 is performing very good without a single glitch or any speed decrease....

Are you making clean reinstalls?

If you have more than one partition a good idea would be leaving your current Windows as it is and installing XP SP2 in another partition. I did it this way so I could have my old one if something went wrong, but XP SP2 works perfect here.

RE: xp sp2? by Fraisie on 10-25-2004 at 03:33 PM

I had so much problems with sp2, i had to uninstall it :/ Would take like 3 days to connect to a website ... (ok maybe not 3 days, but long enough :P)

RE: xp sp2? by Guido on 10-25-2004 at 04:07 PM

I had no problems with it on a 1~2 year old install. Now I made a clean install with SP2 integrated in the setup files and works fine too.
