No More Free Offline Access by master811 on 11-19-2004 at 01:59 AM

Is it just me or are other people extremely annoyed that hotmail has stopped you accessing your account via outlook / OE , about 1-2days ago, it just suddenly stopped working with no warning whatsoever.

I thought it was just a bug at first, then the error log said that offline access can no longer be used with free accounts, I mean hotmail what is going on???

I have used that feature for well over 3yrs and they suddenly stop free access. :@

(edit: sorry I just realised this may be in the wrong forum)

It may be like the extended space - it will slowly start to effect all accounts until finally, hotmail is not so hot :P

Actually, people were well informed via Press. If you keep your eye on sites like Mess.be, Neowin.net, WinBeta etc. then you would have seen that Microsoft announced the changes a while ago.

If you can't live without the feature, sign up for MSN Plus or MSN Premium, you get tons of benefits and services at your finger tips.

Microsoft is making the move not to increase the number of paying Hotmail users but because the feature is being abused by senders of spam, said Brooke Richardson, lead product manager for MSN at Microsoft.

As EvilSeph said, it was announced months ago. Existing accounts are/were able to access the service a short while longer, while new accounts did not have this possibility at all anymore.

Amongst additional sources are articles from ZDNet.com and BBC Tech News.

well gmail's pop3 is not really that good as its not IMAP, nor is it HTTP, which are both better than POP3, unless they have that, then hotmails offline access I still prefer.

POP3 can not be IMAP or HTTP. Those three are all very different protocols. And POP3 is prefered by many people who are serieus about their email, as it is the only pure email protocol. IMAP and "HTTP" are webbased protocols derived from POP3 to give users access to their email thru the normal web-protocol (http). But accessing mail thru the web has many disadvantages for the serious user.

That is exactly what it means.

If it's a free address (and you're not a paying subscriber or something), then I'm quite sure it will also be affected, yes.
