RE: Update Our Little Forum :D by user27089 on 12-08-2004 at 11:24 PM

Agreed, if msgplus.net is christsmassy, I'm sure that dz or somebody could sort this out so that it matches msgplus.net as it always actually has?

RE: Update Our Little Forum :D by Hank on 12-09-2004 at 01:27 AM

an if it was to be done. you could always have somewhat Make it kinda look like Snow drops were falling without going overboard

RE: Update Our Little Forum :D by WDZ on 12-09-2004 at 05:30 AM

Uhh... good enough? (a)

That was actually quite difficult to make... wasted like 45 minutes on it, and it's still not perfect... :dodgy:

I didn't continue the snow all the way across because there are actually 3 images that make up the whole thing... the middle one repeats to fill the empty space, and I didn't want snow in it.

What? It is a PNG, just like the original image. :p
RE: Update Our Little Forum :D by wj on 12-09-2004 at 07:12 AM

Bah, Damn IE. It looks like it needs to be a 24bit PNG instead of an 8bit.

RE: Update Our Little Forum :D by WDZ on 12-09-2004 at 07:22 AM

24bit would make the file size significantly larger.

I just tried it in IE, and it works, but the color is a bit different and it doesn't match up as well as it does in Opera, which is strange... :s

RE: Update Our Little Forum :D by theguy on 12-09-2004 at 11:25 AM

In IE it looks extremely ugly, but it looks fine in firefox.

my 2 cents: screw IE

RE: Update Our Little Forum :D by Eljay on 12-09-2004 at 11:35 AM

* Eljay views it in IE

URRRRRRRGH!!!!!!

good old gamma-correction problems in MSIE and its PNG "(not-)support" :D

if it is 8bit, make it into a gif then. It will fix the gamma-problems. (although filesize is slithly larger though) ;)

btw, do you still have the 24bit png of it? Because the one you've made has its colors reducing by using dithering, while the other images in the bar (and the original logo) don't...

same image, without gamma problems in MSIE...
RE: Update Our Little Forum :D by KeyStorm on 12-09-2004 at 10:04 PM

GIF is dead... Why won't MS support it for once. You know how many nice things you can do with PNG24's alpha channel ... just if the most used browser supported it... :dodgy: (well, slowly it's getting less used ).

Anyway, the header looks good this way WDZ. (Y)

Yeah, will you CookieRevise it? :p

Edit: I tried taking the original full-quality image and saving it in gif format with the same amount of dithering, and the IE problem seems to be fixed. That's cool, but I don't understand it. :-/

I tried not using dithering, but it looked really bad. :^) The colors weren't smoothly blended... they're "blocky." Does dithering cause that problem in IE?

RE: Update Our Little Forum :D by sock on 12-10-2004 at 02:48 PM

Have you tried using a different color selection method (median cut or octree)? Those usually produce nice results with no dithering...

RE: Update Our Little Forum :D by Stigmata on 12-10-2004 at 04:47 PM

use a solid colour :D

magic wand, fill :D

I tried all the methods, and they didn't look nice without dithering. I guess this is just a strange image. :p

Its not. I had exactly the same problem with something i am doing.
My answer was to make a different image for IE and then use php to show the ie image when the user was using IE.
Other wise use the normal image.

The original PNG (without the xmas theme) was also only 8bit, without dithering. Also, choosing the pallette reduction (median cut/octree/etc) is one thing, you can also alter the level of dithering and if needed assign important colors, etc... (all this in PSP, not in PS as that *beeps* fur such palette editing things)

normally yes, but we need to take WDZ's word for it I guess :P... (unless he wants to attach the 24bit PNG :D)

anyways, looks ok now

There might be a dark blue line under the snow, but that's just the background image, and looks fine, IMO.

:D

good news, problem solved....

Like I suspected it was MSIE which doesn't show the gamma-level correctly from the PNG. If there is a gamma-level-chunck, it will be always displayed to dark. If there is no gamma-level-chunck set in the PNG then there is no problem...

Also, I've recreated the image so it isn't dithered. In fact the image is identical (except for the added snow and hat of course). Try to do an arithmetic comparisson ;)

Numbers of colors is 256 (thus no indexes wasted). This is more then the normal logo (150 colors), because of the snow and hat of course.

Normal default logo (8bit):

Fixed XMas logo (8bit) :D:

Original XMas logo (24bit):

I've never heard of "gamma level" and I didn't see any options to remove it... :dodgy:

Since I was the one who had to copy my own graphics off msgplus.net and mess with them anyway, yeah, I approve you :gfdrin:.
