Patchou by Remko on 12-14-2004 at 11:16 PM

Is the name Patchou copyrighted?

If so, where can i see that, if not are users to allowed to have a URL like Patchou.cc or Patchou.be or whatever.

I hope i will hear soon,
Greetings

Remko.

I don't think Patchou is copyrighted.  But I'd assume that if you did purchase a domain with his Web Alias, and used it for Slanderous purpose you'd be contacted by Patchous solicitors.

Why would you want a Patchou domain name anyways?

Patchou is copyrighted.

RE: Patchou by Guido on 12-15-2004 at 01:09 AM

Since it's his creation, Patchou "automatically owns" the copyrights to the name "Patchou"; so you can't copy it (use it to your benefit) without express authorization.

(That's theoretical, however. If you register a trademark in your country named Patchou it's very likely that, until you are sued by Patchou and he demonstrates that he's been using that name for long with these and those purposes, you'll be able to use the name without any significant problem -- that doesn't make it right, of course).

Cyril :p

Anyways, is "our" Patchou really the one and only Patchou? I seem to remember some other people using the same nickname... of course now a Google search for it is useless because of the popularity of MsgPlus... :dodgy:

Actually, not completely useless:

But you won't get anything very interesting, except for a perfume and a dodgy St. Patrick's day page. :P

"Patchou" is trademarked in the United States and registered as a company name in Canada, so no, you can't use it anymore without paying me a billion dollars! mouhahahaha.

RE: Patchou by Patchou on 12-15-2004 at 06:47 PM

I would never have copyrighted it under normal circumstances, however, the success of Plus! required me to take some preventive measures (you can't imagine some of the emails I received so far). And in fact, I learnt something interesting when I applied for the US Trademark: you are allowed to trademark a nickname if you've used it for more than 3 years and you're sufficiently sure that the name is quite unique :).
