Smiley central worse that you thought by J.J on 12-22-2004 at 11:18 AM

Well we all know about smiley central...the spyware and adware etc

I just thought that smiley central downloaders would like to know that it contains a trojan horse...

Trojan: A destructive program that masquerades as a benign application. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves but they can be just as destructive. One of the most insidious types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer.

My uncle is an I.T, he installed them for me...they're great, but they aren't free :P

Ad- Aware SE Personal Edition is free and it is the best free anti adware scanner you can get. Spyware Blaster is another good free program which helps to prevent Spyware/Adware being installed on your machine. If your interested you should look them up on google.

No, SmileyCentral does not contain a trojan...it just contains spyware (the bulk being traffic monitoring cookies) and adware...

Anti-Viruses have a vary wide (and inaccurate) detonation of unwanted-ware (nice wide new term there :p)...much spyware can act like a trojan, and where it may by detonation be a trojan when looked into, it isn't as malicious as the name says. A trojan, that most web users recognise as a trojan are things like Sub7, that can allow someone to remotely control your computer, in smiley central the term is spyware.
The reason people don't know the difference is that most anti-unwanted-ware software developers make the harmless adware, which is just a pain in the ass, sound like dangerous evil things that you must fear...that way they can sell more copies of their programs because they make it sound like they are needed to protect you against things that aren't as dangerous as they actually are. A very good tactic for selling this type of stuff...
And just to prove how wrong some AV's are, take the Messenger Plus sponsor program into consideration. Some AV programs believe that's a trojan. When in fact if you examine it, all it contains is adware...

a bunch of people i know installed that damn smiley central package for msn messenger, and STILL to this very moment they do not realize that it is destroying their computer. a school computer i have used, had that installed.. eventually it was unable to get on the internet... then less than a week later it couldnt get into windows w/o safe mode.

Smiley Central is bad news. Do not install it or like megamuff said "eventually it was unable to get on the internet... then less than a week later it couldnt get into windows w/o safe mode." The comp will die.
