64 or 32 bit processor? by .blade// on 12-23-2004 at 03:28 AM

Firstly, DO NOT ANSWER IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. I am looking into processors and for roughly the same price I can get rather an Intel Pentium 4, 3.0 Ghz (32-bit) processor with Hyper-Threading OR and AMD Athlon 64-bit 2.0 Ghz processor. Which should I get?

(AMD Athlon 3200+ 64-bit)

(AMD Athlon 3500+ 64-bit

(Intel Pentium 4 HT 32-but)

I'll prob. end up getting the 3500+ btw.

i would think 32 bit because you need specialsed operating systems for 64 bit afaik (windows xp 64 bit edition)

Hyper-Threading eh?

P4 id say... then again.... :P

btw there roughly same price? :S

No, you can use it on 32-bit windows. It won't take FULL advantage of the power, but operations will still perform more smoothly.

$25 more for the processor, $30 more for the motherboard, but if you buy the mobo and processor you get HL2, Counter-Strike: Source and Far Cry for free which is a $100+ value so...

I'd go with the AMD Athlon 64-bit 2.0 Ghz processor. I got the 2.2 Ghz AMD Athlon 64-bit with something like Intels hyper threading and it runs amazing! You can run it on any Windows type (32 bit or 64 bit). Very stable and reliable. Excelent processor (Y)

If you want a fast crash free comp. get the AMD Athlon 64-bit 2.0 Ghz processor.

I just realised the 3500+ is the only 1 that comes with HL2 AND FarCry 2 so I added it to the list. Thx for the input.

I'd go with the 64-bit because that way you won't have to upgrade your hardware in a few years to support 64-bit programs. Also, you can have more RAM in a 64-bit processor. 4 GB is the limit for a 32-bit, I don't know the limit for a 64-bit.

AMD 64-bit CPU's are amazingly speedy with 64 bit apps. Wait until 64-bit Windows comes out if you fairly want to judge the performace of these CPU's. 64-bit is backwards compatiable with 32-bit apps (which includes Windows).

The only upside about the Intel processors with HT is with MPEG encoding, where it performs somewhat faster. Other than that fully go with the AMD processor.

definitely the AMD Athlon 3500+ 64-bit, its just faster and more reliable, I hate the Intel CPU's, they seem to be slow and just not as good as the AMD... hence why I have an amd

I'd have to go with the AMD Athlon 3500+ 64-Bit also. My dad has the 3200+ and it runs very smoothly and moves data quickly.

That's Longhorn Alpha, I think invasion meens the actual Longhorn Beta. Anyways, I'll use XP 64-bit edition AND XP Media Center edition and I'll see what I want to do when the year is up.

Anyways, I ordered my processor and motherboard last night (early boxing day sales). It IS an S939. I got an Asus A8V Delux motherboard for $15 off and it comes with a wifi adaptor for free, an AMD Athlon 3500+ for $30 off, and I also got Half-Life 2/Counter-Strike: Source and Far Cry 64-bit edition for free as a promo :0  :D

I'd buy the AMD 64-bits and get a 64bit OS (Y)
