Quake death toll nears 10,000 [CNN.com] by leito on 12-26-2004 at 10:21 PM

"Quake death toll nears 10,000

Massive tsunamis triggered by the largest earthquake to shake the planet in more than 40 years wiped out coastal areas across Asia as far as 1,000 miles away, killing almost 10,000 people. Most of the fatalities were in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India."

-CNN.com

This is sad, we should all pray for this people.

RE: Quake death toll nears 10,000 [CNN.com] by Choli on 12-26-2004 at 10:36 PM

it had 8.9 degrees in the ritcher scale (i dunno if i've written it correctly) which is a very very very hard earthquake.

RE: Quake death toll nears 10,000 [CNN.com] by Titty on 12-26-2004 at 10:45 PM

That's frightening.  People were chaotic when Hurricanes in Florida happened.  A small casualty compared to this new event... The damage there sounds horrible.  I hope they recover well.

I read about this earlier this morning talking to Saral....

I'm just going to pray for the families of the victims of these quakes, its not a nice thought.. this is the reason why I would never live on a techtonic plate line thing.... (can't remember the correct terminology) ^_^...

I was listening to Radio 1, and there is a line that you can call to check that your family members are okay, maybe you should try and find that out...

normally lines like that are for people from (in your case) the UK to ask information about other inhabitants of the UK who are spending their holidays in an area where a disaster struck.
RE: Quake death toll nears 10,000 [CNN.com] by user27089 on 12-27-2004 at 12:47 PM

No, on Radio 1, it said, if you are worried about relatives in these countries, then you can fone '.........' and check to see if they're okay, I tried to get the number for Saral's sake, but it happened to fast...

Many countries have their own numbers, like Switzerland i know has, and Germany has their own. But its tough getting through as the lines are full.

Luckyly no-one i know went there, but i feel very sorry for the people who are there.

I know, I just used the UK as an example because traxor is from the UK. Belgium has got its own line too.

RE: Quake death toll nears 10,000 [CNN.com] by John Anderton on 12-27-2004 at 01:56 PM

Saralk, Chennai is in a bit of a mess. Ya in the morn. papers here its written over 10000 dead. Tsunami's were awesome man. I saw some video's and it was like they were drifting away whole cars. They travel at such high speeds and my god do they cause destruction or what !!!
8.9 on the richter scale is the biggest quake in the last 40 years !!! The tsunami's were the 4th biggest of all time.
I'll pray for all ppl misssing and injured. Hope they'll be ok.

richter scale is from 0 to 9..
that's not exactly true. That scale measures the energy of the earthquake using logarithms *; that means that the more energy an earthquake has, the higher degrees in that scale, with no limit. However, 9 degrees is quite a lot and it's "nearly impossible" to have an eathquake so big.

* -> ie: each point more in that scale means an earthquake with 10 times more energy.

btw, i've heard on the radio a couple of hours ago that there are already 25000 deaths :-(
RE: Quake death toll nears 10,000 [CNN.com] by user27089 on 12-27-2004 at 11:11 PM

Yeah, the whole death toll has moved up, and it is really quite sad, it doesn't help when I'm at my mates using aol, and the main window thing that starts up has pictures of loads of people weeping, its just horrible...

RE: Quake death toll nears 10,000 [CNN.com] by saralk on 12-28-2004 at 11:02 AM

we still havent heard from my family in India, were not sure if its because the unthinkable has happened or if it is because the phone lines are in a gridlock there. Weve been trying to get through and all we get are busy line tones.

Hoping it is the latter.

BBC News Information
CNN News Info
ITV News Info

As you can see, each one has different information about the places it hit, and some are more precise than others, its a really bad natural disaster, and I seriously feel for all of the families that have lost people, and the people who have lost their own homes, it must be terrible...

Thats really aweful. I heard the foll. on the news. There is a famous church in chennai, India where ppl from india go for every x'mas and this year since it was a saturday many (most) ppl stayed back so they could have fun there. As they went for sunday morn. mass the tsunami's struck. Just as i was thinking of it the father of the church said the exact same thing that of it hadn't been a week end most visitors would have gone.
Now the area around the church is like a mass graveyard with bodies all around under the broken trees and fallen buildings !!
Too sad. Just can't express my grief enough !

Its an awful situation.  A real shame people are over there. I think the worlds governments are being a bit ignorant though.  The UK haven't even frozen those countries debts.  Its shocking.

money rules the world and the rich West profits from the poor East, it has always been that way and it will always be that way I think.

I live in India and well in the andaman and nicobar islands ... ppl say that the topography has changed sice that unfateful day !!!!! There were over 120 quakes after it in the comming week of which many were bout 6 on the r. scale !!!! Also i read in the leading newspaper of india that the energy released in the quake / quakes was equivalent to 20+ bombs which were dropped on hiroshima and i heard that the world weather is also been effected. There was a lot of rain in the middle east or something but the weather has definately changed. I saw the movie day after tommorow a few weeks back and man i hope something like that doesn't happen.

RE: Quake death toll nears 10,000 [CNN.com] by FrozernFire on 01-21-2005 at 03:35 AM

yes the weather have changed. land size and shape changed in indonesia by a lot. aceh is actually now a tad smaller since water covered it. now they are worrying that the fault line south of the epicentre on dec 26 is stressed, so maybe in the next 10-20 years, another big earthquake will happen

I figure that the world is near it's end, it's at it's final disaster, "in the bible it says that, 3 major wars will happen, one is a 10 year world war, and how long has this war being going on...WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!! HES TERMINATING US!! dun dun dun!

Skin ticket: aka Doomsday predictor. C'mon all u can do is hope for the best man. You have to have faith and think positively. In that way the world can end in neway by a big meteor shower or something but can we do anything about it (well except the stunt in armegeddon). All you can do is hope everything will go well. :D
Hopefully we will get thru and man must learn from his mistakes and try to help nature instead of destroy it. Newayz enough said. We will find out whats gonna happen in a few years :P
[sarcasm - jokingly] Till then all ya guyz go to church or neother place of worship and pray to god this doesn't happen [/sarcasm - jokingly]
RE: Quake death toll nears 10,000 [CNN.com] by FrozernFire on 01-21-2005 at 11:54 AM

i think not. there are other much more destructive disasters and wars. in history there are bigger earthquakes causing a bigger death toll. and since the 2 world wars, there is no other worldwide scruffles. if you go by the bible's defination of doomsday, it's happening over and over again :/
