Use a more secure browser, or increase your security settings. If you are using XP upgrade to SP2. Also run an active virus checker.

What type of adware is it?
After installing XP by default the Messaging service activates, most people turn that off, you sure it's not that. Thanks to some little gimboids that's as good as adware now

first websites you should ever visit, is google, search for SpywareBlaster, then visit the first result and download, and install it. after that, browsing the web will never give you spyware/adware again. -EDIT: GUARANTEED!! if you still get spyware and adware after installing, updating, and putting into effect spywareblaster, i will give you double your money back!

No I'm not...what I'm talking about is the system designed to let MS get in contact with all it's users. Some people hijacked it a while ago to advertise...they look like this;

Like Underlord said, just set your browser security properly.

If if you don't have any kind of virusscanner/anti-adware scanners/popup blocker, etc... and only have SP1 and only use MSIE, even then you will not get any adware/spyware installed automatically if you configure your browser properly (like do not automatically accept/install activex controls)...

And the things that take advantage of security leaks, that's why there is www.windowsupdate.com (and no, you even don't have to install SP2 for that, just the normal security fixes)

In short: update your windows and configure your browser properly before going on the net and above all use your common sense (like don't click on the popups "do you know your pc can be hacked? click here to...")...
