Desktop icons bug... by -Lock- on 12-30-2004 at 07:38 PM

Well, after installing the new MSN Messenger 7.0, it also installed 7 icons onto my desktop having absolutely nothing to do with the MSN Messenger service, I'll name each one...

1. Website Hosting

2. Bingo

3. Casino Online

4. Printer Cartridges

5. Card Games

6. Travel

7. Poker

Thing is when I right click to delete them, nothing pops up, not allowing me to remove them from my desk top. Has anyone else had these icons install them selves onto your pc, if so how did you remove them exactly??? :^)

Those appear to be like the icons that appear when you install the messenger plus sponsor.
Click here for instructions for removing the sponor.

If the icons are not related to messenger plus. Then try uninstalling messenger 7.

The icons actually came with the program; I didn't even want the sponsor that came with it. 8-) Well everything so far hasn't worked, I ran Spybot, uninstalled Messenger 7.0 from add & remove programs, and then restarted. The icons remain though, as if some kind of permanent bug. Clicking on them takes me no where but a blank screen. Well I hope someone else had the problem that could help. :S

if u read the thread u got a link to ( http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=21598 ) then you will see that it clearly says don't try used any other program (eg spybot) to get rid of the sponsor

what u need to do is reinstall messenger plus with the sponsor !! then goto add/remove program and uninstall plus and select to remove all components. this will then uninstall the sponsor program.

you can then reinstall plus, but make sure u read the install and tick  no i don't want to install the sponsor

Also note that MSN Messenger 7 and Messenger Plus! are two different things.

How to uninstall

If you have accidentally installed the optional sponsor program that is bundled in the Messenger Plus! installer, then don't use any adware/spyware removal programs, as this will corrupt the files, therefore making uninstallation of the file near impossible to uninstall. If you have used Adware/spyware removal software, then you will have to uninstall, then reinstall messenger plus, with the sponsor program again to get all of the files for the sponsor program back.

To uninstall sponsor software, close down internet explorer (in the system tray also), go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, now scroll down the list until you find 'Messenger Plus! 3 click 'Change/Remove''.

follow uninstallation instructions, filling in the security box with the numbers aswell. This is just a safety procedure in case something tries to uninstall it without you knowing..

If you wait for about 2 minutes, you will notice that all of the icons on the desktop are gone, and there is no bar in Internet Explorer any more.

You can now reinstall Messenger Plus! without the sponsor program, and you will not have any more hastle whatsoever.

I have exact same problem. I did the exact steps traxor siad, and then when i open IE, the toolbar was gone, but as soon as i minimized it, ALL the icons popped right back on. Is there simply a way to remove the icons and toolbars?

RE: Desktop icons bug... by Plik on 12-31-2004 at 01:20 AM

if traxors method doesnt work try the uninstaller from the company that makes the sponsor

Alright, those icons have a home page that automatically installs it self, once there go to help. It'll say something of the lines of "It installed it self", after that it'll give you a file to download (As wierd as it sounds, it actually helps), in it is that bar code to remove it, if it says it can't find it (Like me), they'll give the program a force removal. Basicly, you have to go to it's source, to get rid of it. (Y)

I tried a little test. Ran the cleaning program, restarted computer WITHOUT internet (no cables attached), and those icons STILL spawned on my desktop????

Also, all the removal programs are the same 85kb one that doesn't work and only comes back once i restart computer =/
