RE: mozzilla firefox by Mike on 01-03-2005 at 03:49 PM

Just give it a try (y)

RE: mozzilla firefox by WDZ on 01-03-2005 at 03:52 PM

You should check the official website... I found the system requirements page within a few seconds. :p

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/system-requirements.html

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-03-2005 at 03:54 PM

haha, ok, is it any better than internet explorer??

RE: mozzilla firefox by Mike on 01-03-2005 at 03:57 PM

Well, it is said that it has much better security.
And that it loads webpages faster.
You can also use extensions with the program.

Just try it, don't be afraid ;)

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-03-2005 at 03:58 PM

ok, well i might have to check that i have enough RAM and stuff

RE: mozzilla firefox by user27089 on 01-03-2005 at 04:03 PM

I don't see why you wouldn't have enough ram, its not a resource wasting browser at all, its just greatly improved and takes about 5 seconds to start up and then you can browse fast, it blocks popups, easy tabbed browser, nice User interface, a lot of plugins and stuff... and a lot of websites now are being made to look their best in Mozilla.

RE: mozzilla firefox by saralk on 01-03-2005 at 04:05 PM

yes, it is much better, it is a lot more secure than IE, has a lot more features and there is a large community that is constantly developing bug fixes and new plugins for it

RE: mozzilla firefox by user27089 on 01-03-2005 at 04:06 PM

Mozilla Firefox 1.0 was out for 2 weeks and made the news because millions of people downloaded it, quite an achievement for a browser that hasn't been going for very long... :|

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-03-2005 at 04:08 PM

ok, i'll download it tomorrow cause over here its gettin pretty late, how long does it take to download???

RE: mozzilla firefox by user27089 on 01-03-2005 at 04:12 PM

it is 4.98Mb so with:

Dialup 56kb/s - 15 - 20 mins
Cable - 5 mins

RE: mozzilla firefox by Mike on 01-03-2005 at 04:15 PM

It actually depends on your internet connection.

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-03-2005 at 04:16 PM

what do you mean my internet connection??

RE: mozzilla firefox by user27089 on 01-03-2005 at 04:18 PM

He means the speed of your internet, see the speed of yoru internet varies on what type you have, you could have asdl which is broadband and quite fast, you can have cable which is a digital internet, thats quite fast, or you can have dial-up which is generally slow and everytime you want to go on the net, you have to connect, whereas, with the others, it is always on...

RE: mozzilla firefox by Mike on 01-03-2005 at 04:19 PM

If it is slow or fast.
56k is slow ADSL is fast

Edit: Traxor beat me :P

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-03-2005 at 04:21 PM

i have isdn, although it is a dial-up, the dial up is fast and the internet becomes quite fast. how do i found out how fast mine is???

RE: mozzilla firefox by Vilkku on 01-03-2005 at 04:34 PM

ISDN is generally 128 kb/s or more, so it shouldn't be a problem downloading it. If you use Internet Explorer it should show you about how long it will take.

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-03-2005 at 04:36 PM

ok, thankyou

RE: mozzilla firefox by spokes on 01-03-2005 at 05:05 PM

firefox is the best browser i've ever used, fast and its tabbed :D

RE: mozzilla firefox by Jhrono on 01-03-2005 at 10:59 PM

dont start another browser forum war!

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 04:25 AM

is there anyway it could stuff up my computer??

RE: mozzilla firefox by ddunk on 01-04-2005 at 05:00 AM

Anything you can can "stuff up" your computer, but the cances Firefox will do it? Slim.

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 05:02 AM

aslong as it does not give me viruses or hurts my computer in anyway, i'll download it.

RE: mozzilla firefox by ddunk on 01-04-2005 at 05:05 AM

Nope, no viruses or any other harmful side stuff

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 05:08 AM

i found this on the official website, do i need any of it
Linux
Software Requirements
Please note that Linux distributors may provide packages for your distribution which have different requirements.

Linux kernel - 2.2.14 with the following libraries or packages minimums:
glibc 2.3.2
XFree86-3.3.6
gtk+2.0
fontconfig (also known as xft)
libstdc++5
Firefox has been tested on Red Hat Linux 8.0 and later

RE: mozzilla firefox by WDZ on 01-04-2005 at 05:14 AM

If you use Windows, you can ignore the stuff about Linux.

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 05:55 AM

ok, thanks, so all i need is
Pentium 233 MHz (Recommended: Pentium 500MHz or greater)
64 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater)
52 MB hard drive space ??

RE: mozzilla firefox by Vilkku on 01-04-2005 at 08:33 AM

All I can say is that if your computer is under 6 years old it will pretty certainly work. If Internet Explorer works, I can almost guarantee you that Firefox will work, too. It's not a major system upgrade or anything, and if it doesn't work you can uninstall it. Just download and test.

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 10:36 AM

ive downloaded it now, should i uninstall internet explorer???

RE: mozzilla firefox by Vilkku on 01-04-2005 at 10:40 AM

It's up to you, but I don't even know if it is possible to uninstall it. Anyone know?

RE: mozzilla firefox by John Anderton on 01-04-2005 at 10:44 AM

I use firefox as well. Of late ie use to freeze my pc once every 5 mins or when i open a new ie window/other application. Not so for firefox. Firefox rules (Y)

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 10:49 AM

how do i change it so that every window i open is mozzillla firefox. e.g, when i am on messenger and hit the e-mail button it goes into internet explorer, not firefox

RE: mozzilla firefox by user27089 on 01-04-2005 at 10:55 AM

YOu need to download stuff plug for that ;) www.stuffplug.com, having firefox as your default won't prevent msn from opening in IE, as it is a microsoft product and they don't want some competition with how it opens, but with stuffplug, whatever default browser you have, anything to do with msn that is linked in msn will open in Mozilla Firefox...

RE: mozzilla firefox by Vilkku on 01-04-2005 at 10:55 AM

To get it to open in your default browser (in this case Firefox) you need StuffPlug-NG. If you are using MSN 6.2 you can get it from www.stuffplug.com, if you are using MSN 7 you have to use anohter version. I don't remember the url for that one but I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 11:05 AM

traxor, do you know the url for the one for 7.0??

RE: mozzilla firefox by user27089 on 01-04-2005 at 11:09 AM

http://www.stuffplug.com/SPNGMSN7.zip

there you go ;).

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 11:13 AM

thankyou, but how do i use it:P

RE: mozzilla firefox by user27089 on 01-04-2005 at 11:26 AM

You must install it, then restart messenger and have the following ticked when the blue stuffplug configuration box appears (these are the configurations that I use):

  • Enable Auto-Talkers (you can set a talker and this translates your text into certain things like 1337)
  • Enable Over-sized Display Pictures (you can have bigger dp's)
  • Open Hotmail Inbox in default browser (what you want ;))
  • Enable window opened notifier (when someone opens a window with you it tells you)
  • Enable on-the-fly compression (puts the file you send into a .zip then person on the 'other end' gets it normally)
  • Alert when someone deletes you (you are told when you get deleted)
  • Enable over-sized emoticons (big emotes)
  • Boost Message-length ro 10 000 chars (you can have 10 000 letters)
  • Polygamy (Clone Messenger) (msn7) (enables multi-msn)
  • Removes 5 custom emoticon limit (you can use more than 5 custom emotes in one Message)
  • Enable all custom emo shortcuts (you can use any shortcuts for custom emotes)
  • Disable emoticon auto completion (disables the auto complete for the emotes)
  • Disable 3 filetransfer limit (send more than three files at once)
  • Use google for searching (in the main window, it uses google to search rather than msn)
(then you restart msn once again)

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 11:30 AM

does stuffplug involve having winzip??? like to extract or whatever

RE: mozzilla firefox by user27089 on 01-04-2005 at 11:33 AM

No, you don't need winzip, just right click on the .zip folder and press extract here, winzip is already on windowsxp, but its not as good as the main big winzip that you pay for ;).

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 11:36 AM

i dont have windows xp though

RE: mozzilla firefox by user27089 on 01-04-2005 at 11:40 AM

You should have it I think, if not just download the trial of winzip ;).

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 11:45 AM

im not sure if i have it because i cannot find  an extract option, does the trial cost anything??

RE: mozzilla firefox by user27089 on 01-04-2005 at 11:47 AM

No, it doesn't cost a thing, because its a trial lol... www.winzip.com just download, and you'll have it for 30 days, after that you won't be able to use it unless you pay, or you can pm me and I can tell you something else to do 8-)... which is so cheap that it is in fact free.

RE: mozzilla firefox by Edna Mode on 01-04-2005 at 11:49 AM

where is the free trial on that webpage, i cant find it:S

RE: mozzilla firefox by saralk on 01-04-2005 at 12:30 PM

RE: mozzilla firefox by Geniuzzz on 01-07-2005 at 10:23 AM

the only trouble:( is that a lot of websites are not tested with Firefox and only run fine in IE:|

happily  you can add "Show page in IE" to the context menu, usefull for those sites maintained by (N) webmasters....

have fun...

Just about everything in Windows needs it. It's built so deeply into the kernel that IE crashing can cause the whole system to. It's terrible.

Yes, and I haven't either! Violet, try not to use the forums as a Conversation (Chat) window. You could try to set up better questions, so you'll get better answers. There is no need of a 6 page thread just to download Firefox and Stuffplug. There are already many threads about this, search before posting.

Well just my opinion, you could PM me if you need help in something, that way we dont :spam: the forums.
RE: mozzilla firefox by WDZ on 01-07-2005 at 07:11 PM

Thread closed because it has become off-topic and spammy. :dodgy:
