just downloaded messenger+, quick icons screen is greyed out. how do i get the emotions to work?

You got to enable the quick icons panel: plus > preferences > message helpers > quick icons (tab)...check "enable the quick icons panel"

I have the same problem using Windows Messenger 4.7.3001 with Plus. It is impossible to activate the Quick Icons option because clicking the tab Quick Icons brings to a greyed screen.

It is because windows messenger doesn't support the quick icons, I think that its only 7.x

have you tried re installing messenger+ in control pannel under windows conponents?
