GMail Drive - use GMail as virtual harddrive by andrey on 01-23-2005 at 10:22 PM

Wow, finally a useful way to use your 1 GB Gmail account:

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.

Ever since Google started to offer users a GMail e-mail account, which includes storage space of a 1000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with. With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your GMail account and retrieve them again.
When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account. The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the GMail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures. But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer.
You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Please note that GMail Drive is still an experimental tool. There's still a number of limitations of the file-system (such as total filename size must be less than 40 characters). Since the tool hooks up with the free GMail Service provided by Google, changes in the GMail system may break the tools ability to function. I cannot guarantee that files stored in this manner will be accessible in the future.
I already installed it and it seems to work fine at the moment.
It adds a new virtual harddrive ("GMail Drive") and once you logged in to GMail, you can store files on your account easily.
Haven't tested if 10 MB + files get through, I think GMails Attachment limit is 10 MB.

Sounds like a good idea and if GMail doesn't suspend the support for this, I will probably keep using it.

Remember, if GMail updates, it could be possible that GMail Drive won't work anymore.

This came out like 6 months ago :P

Also: The speed can be rather slow and you get quite a few errors, not to mention the ban of .exe files (even those within .zip files) on gmail.

RE: GMail Drive - use GMail as virtual harddrive by user27089 on 01-24-2005 at 09:36 PM

I think that you can go to properties and change the file type, i'm not sure... try dragging it into notepad and changing it to .txt ... and then save it as .exe after... wait...

It might work... I'll try and report back :D

I am a failure... [Image: ashamed.gif]

Anyway, Nice prog.

Well, I cant use .rar files, as the PCs in my school doesnt allow me to use it. And I cant install programs there :(...I'll just have to make do with renaming the extenstion, but, I hope the school's PC I can rename them back...

I doubt so though...:(
