The file that wouldn't go away... by frankiedaman on 02-17-2005 at 10:58 PM

I wonder if any of you could help me out with this strange problem.

One mp3 in my music directory is very different to the others - the reason being is that you can't delete it, you can't move it, you can't rename it, you can't change it's attributes, you can't even open it, yet it is still there.

I've tried using permanent deletion tools or tools to shred the file for good but it isn't showing up as available in the list.

If you check it's location information, it isn't even there. It's like there's a "ghost" of a file on there that doesn't exist, yet it shows up.

I'm thinking that a cluster of my hard disk is corrupted and that one file is that cluster...

But does anyone else have any ideas about how i would get rid of this file?

Thanks very much.

Start your PC in safe mode, then w/e is holding it open won't launch and you can delete it.

I don't think it's anything holding it open because it can't be opened by anything at all. It's like a "shell" of a file.

if that doesn't work then you need to go to registry and delete a file.........i'll go have a look round to see where it is........

i don't think it's spyware Sikstyles - as they normally apply to exe's and shortcuts. I downloaded this mp3 file myself, mp3s can't contain executable code for spyware and such.

Toddy - how would i go about deleting the file via the registry?

Actually an MP3 can :P Does the MP3 actually play in any other program? If not then it may be an .exe renamed to .MP3 :P

the mp3 plays in nothing at all and i checked the extension and it was just normal ".mp3" and not ".mp3.exe" - if it was an exe or a file usable in anything then i would've had the option to rename it, delete it, hide it, move it etc.

No, what I mean is that someone could have just renaed it from "virus.exe" to "U2 - vertigo.exe".

How big is it?

The file is 4.32MB

It's an MP3 ripped off an album called "Ride with the Underground" and it's track 11.

I've enclosed an attachment of what options are available if you right click the file. Note that "Rename" and "Delete" are missing. Plus, playing the file in winamp doesn't work - says it's not there.

Viewing it's properties via File > Properties brings up the properties screen but nothing is filled in.

I don't reckon it's a virus because i haven't noticed any other strange behaviour or any other files locking up like this.

I just go rid of AA install by safe mode...have u tried it frankie?...if you are using win xp, when booting keep F8 pressed...then choose security mode, select the Os, wait a bit, slect your user, find the file, try  to delete it...either with the del key and with right click -> Delete...empty trash and its done:P

That sounds like it could work. Thanks johnny, I will give that a go tomorrow :) (it's too late now and I got better stuff to do than fix some file this late at night :P)

p.s. i think you mean F8 rather than F18 - never seen that key before, and by "security mode" you mean "safe mode". :P

I have a file like this also, except it is (or was) a folder.

When I right click it, Nothing pops up and pressing delete or dragging it has no effect at all. =/
