Sugg: Image Protection by user27089 on 02-22-2005 at 08:11 AM

WDZ,

Stephen, as been coming onto this website, taking my graphics, and putting them on another forum under my name, claiming that he is the one who designed the graphics etc. Its really annoying me, I'm thinking of contacting his parents or something but yeah anyway. I propose that you should have some type of protection, where you can't right click and save your image, there are ways around this I know, but somebody dumb enough to steal the graphics, would also be dumb enough as not to know these work-arounds, its just a minor precaution really :-/...

RE: Sugg: Image Protection by John Anderton on 02-22-2005 at 08:33 AM

He's stealing :dodgy:
Ya i think if it can be done then u should employ image control but then we wont be able to save the funny pics that ppl send :undecided:
Can we disallow saving of avatars and pics ??
LATE EDIT: Auxin is banned :O Spam or for some other reason ^o) Spam i think i read that in his rep report ^o)

RE: Sugg: Image Protection by Purity on 02-22-2005 at 02:10 PM

To avoid the disable right click, all you have to do is take a screenshot of the page the pic is on and then cut it out.....

Ya I agree with this image protection idea.

We all know why he's banned.

an easier way would be to disable javascript :p
too much work for such an easy-to-bypass feature, if you ask me...
btw, which forum was it, traxor ?

No way. :-/

- Those scripts are extremely dodgy, and are basically just hacks... I don't think JavaScript was ever meant to do such things.
- They never work like they're supposed to, or work in all browsers.
- They're very easy to get around.
- They'd make it harder to save any images, even the ones people are allowed to save.
- They might have other undesirable side effects, since they mess with your mouse clicks.
- I don't know JavaScript very good.

Why don't you add some text, or a logo, or a watermark, or something like that? If you plan on uploading your graphics to a public website, then they're vulnerable. Sorry. :-/
RE: Sugg: Image Protection by user27089 on 02-22-2005 at 04:22 PM

I have, all of the graphics have got the name 'traxor' wrote on them :|... They're the ones he stole... :-/...

its completely immoral...

what steps shall I take then :-/.

Yep, I agree.

I dunno. It's not my problem. It's between you and the thief. :-/
RE: Sugg: Image Protection by user27089 on 02-22-2005 at 04:28 PM

But surely, there are certain steps that I can take to assure that he doesn't use my images again, if you make something, its automatically copyrighted to you isn't it? So, I can do something...

Stephen, went onto a forum, stole my display pictures, created a user named traxor and used my avatars...

RE: Sugg: Image Protection by Eljay on 02-22-2005 at 04:29 PM

or you can set the avatars as a bg image and have a blank image over the top, therefore when u right click > save it saves a nice blank image for you :nana:

yes still easy to bypass but nicely confusing for noobs

I think thats the best idea yet, it will be hards for noobs to do, or figure out.

Yeah, there is that... no JavaScript... (y)

But what would have the avatar background applied to it? Probably have to create a new <div>... :-/
RE: Sugg: Image Protection by user27089 on 02-22-2005 at 04:59 PM

its not that hard to create a new div really, apart from the whole thing if people create a large display picture, or something, maybe you should have one of those things like IPB, where if your picture is over a certain size, then u aren't allowed to even hotlink it...

RE: Sugg: Image Protection by saralk on 02-22-2005 at 05:15 PM

what i think you should do is have a DIV with the maximum height that the avatars can be, and then have the image in that div, and another div on top of that, which should make it unclickable.

A div on top of a div? I don't think I know how to do that. :p

Some kind of relative positioning? :-/

Meh... I don't wanna add avatar protection anyway... I wanna go back to sleep.

You know they could just take a screenshot to get around the image anti-saving code...
RE: Sugg: Image Protection by saralk on 02-22-2005 at 05:39 PM

yeh, obviously, but the idea is to throw of the would-be casual image theif.

Of course if you really want to get technical, you could somehow make the image a video, so it doesnt print screen quite so easily :p

Or there might be some javascript that makes a div with a black background appear when you press print screen

(stigmata was reading traxor's emails the other day)
RE: Sugg: Image Protection by Snake on 02-22-2005 at 09:23 PM

I can see the consern over the pics but like comon your going to do all this coding so ppl can stop taking pics, like come on it's 1 littel pic under your name!

But it's his hard work, and he doesn't want people to steal it. Traxor, just go slap him with a large trout. [Image: troutslap.gif]
RE: Sugg: Image Protection by surfichris on 02-22-2005 at 10:01 PM

Personally I don't think it is our or WDZ's responsibility to protect things that have been stolen off these forums or elsewhere. It is your responsibility

If it is really your own work then you can action him with a cease and decist letter for him to stop using your intellectual property. It is copyrighted work to you.

Now with this 'div' idea and the background as the avatar you would need to also store the height/width of the avatar so the div would stretch and for the size of the clear image. The same applies for the idea of two div's - you need the div to be able to stretch right over the top.

My experience is, when you start playing with something like this (the two div idea) you're going to be using relative/absolute positioning. It's going to create browser incompatibilities and all sorts of problems.

code:
class avatar {width:maxwidth; height:maxheight; align:center; valign:top}

<div class="avatar" style="background:avatarlink"></div>

and to make it even safer
code:
<div class="avatar" style="background:avatarlink"><img class="avatar" src="blankimage.jpg"></div>

the codes dodgy, but i forget all the names of the css tags and im too lazy to look them up so blah.

as (i forgot who) said, this will also keep avatars to a maximum size.
RE: Sugg: Image Protection by Ahmad on 02-22-2005 at 10:41 PM

Instead of your name, put your email address (make a new one if you don't wanna give out you're original one).

That way you can just pop up on these forums and tell them that guy is stealing your pictures and they can send an email to the address on the picture (which is yours) for proof (of which you'll send a reply confirming the story). Then he'll be exposed for the liar he is.

Just an idea.
