RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by The_Thief on 03-07-2005 at 06:40 PM

After reading the recomendations by microsoft All I can say is wow but I don't take them seriously because they said XP wouldn't run on anything less then a P4 1GZ and they were wrong :D

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Bionic on 03-07-2005 at 06:44 PM

It looks too much like a theme, still it should be pretty sweet on the final release build...

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Anubis on 03-07-2005 at 06:45 PM

With every new build, Longhorn seems to become more alien, when I first use it I assume it'll take a lot of getting used to.

Desktop CPU: 3 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with HyperThreading Technology 530 (or higher) or 3 GHz Intel Xeon processor with 2 MB L2 cache, or AMD Athlon 64, Sempron, or Opteron 100, 200, or 800 processor, single or dual-core versions.
They won't ask for much will they?

That was an early estimate, but I have XP running on a comp with a 500mhz processor, and it's fine and smooth if you use the apropiet settings, and install it on a clean format of a NTFS hard disk.
RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by The_Thief on 03-07-2005 at 06:48 PM

Requirements based on the article above:

Here are Microsoft's Longhorn hardware recommendations:

Desktop CPU: 3 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with HyperThreading Technology 530 (or higher) or 3 GHz Intel Xeon processor with 2 MB L2 cache, or AMD Athlon 64, Sempron, or Opteron 100, 200, or 800 processor, single or dual-core versions.

Mobile CPU: 1.86 GHz Intel Pentium M processor 750 (or higher), or AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology, Mobile Sempron, or Mobile Athlon 64 processor.

RAM: 512 MB of RAM or more, all platforms.

BUT I think that bare minimum despite what microsoft sais may be a 1ghz processor, video card, sound card, 256mb ram (ddr or sdram)

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Caboose on 03-07-2005 at 07:33 PM

w00t! I can't wait for Longhorn ^_^

I just hope I can get a new processor, even IF my current one will run it :S

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Wabz on 03-07-2005 at 08:08 PM

I won't be running it for a while!  A lot of networks are currently happy with Windows 2000/20003 servers and win 2k machines.  And for standard stuff they do the job.  If longhorns released next year I think it'll take it too 2010 to actually make a mark.

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by mad_onion on 03-07-2005 at 09:04 PM

ah longhorn. yes it is very nice. they are working very hard on it.
look out for 25th of May when the first beta may be released :)(these are estimates release may slip to WinHEC 2005).

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Ash_ on 03-07-2005 at 09:12 PM

has BETA testing-signup already been done?

or are they only giving the BETA to private friends or people inside the company?

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by mad_onion on 03-07-2005 at 09:14 PM

there is a chance you may get the beta by signing up at beta.microsoft.com
or you can buy a MSDN subscription http://msdn.microsoft.com/howtobuy/

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Hank on 03-08-2005 at 01:29 AM

Longhorn looks good but i think i'll stick to WinXP64Bit an Linux , there's no real need to get longorn, if you had of reaad, WinFS is gona be Backported into WindowsXP,  my guess is that Microsoft are gonna use WinXP as a testing bases for WinFS

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by lopardo on 03-08-2005 at 03:04 AM

That screenshot looks nice. I hope the search function actually works fine in Longhorn, not like in Windows XP, in which is totally broke and useless. :-/

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by albert on 03-08-2005 at 05:05 AM

hey all I don't rlly understand a lot in computers.. but I ot a longhorn PCD, you think it would run good on a AMD ATHLON XP 2800+ 2.12 GHZ 514 MB of mem?

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Mike on 03-08-2005 at 05:18 AM

i think ur right DX , no way a 16 year old would be able to work at RedMond , he'd have to be a Windows Tester
RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by DXtremz on 03-08-2005 at 08:02 AM

The beta isn't out yet ;) (I'd know)

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by segosa on 03-08-2005 at 08:58 AM

I'm sure Microsoft wouldn't be happy to have people pretending they're employed by them, mad_onion. :P

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by mad_onion on 03-08-2005 at 04:42 PM

typo in my first post.
i have no affiliation to Microsoft.
25th of May isnt that long away just wait, i think you will be pleasantly surprised with what you see. but WinHEC 2005 will be very big.

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Dane on 03-08-2005 at 08:25 PM

Erm, so basically, Microsoft is aiming this as a "Must have Upgrade", yet the minimum system requirements meet the Maximum System Specs from major manufacturers at this time for home users looking for a general PC?  Unless Microsoft is expecting all the new computer buyers to pay $2,000+ for a system that meets Microsofts MINIMUM system requirements for longhorn, and $4,000-$6,000 for one that is actually considered "Adequate" by Microsoft, Longhorn will be FAR less of a hit than XP was.  Sorry, but the systems they are suggesting are just too advanced, by there specs, my sisters new computer meets the MINIMUM system specs, like, exactly on the line.

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by albert on 03-08-2005 at 08:33 PM

I totaly agree with Dane, I mean I paid 1400$ for my computer.. but it hardly reaches the minimum.. I also got a 1800$ clone, probably wont do the job either.. Longhorn wont be so popular

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by DXtremz on 03-08-2005 at 09:03 PM

I'm happy, my comp beats the minimum \o/

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Dane on 03-08-2005 at 09:19 PM

lol, Well, I think it will be a BIG outrage to consumers, especially those (like my sister) who just bought new computers that only meet the Minimum System Requirements. Albeit the computer my sister bought meets far surpasses Windows XPs Recommended System Requirements.

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by segosa on 03-08-2005 at 09:59 PM

Longhorn is to be released in a few years' time (I thought 2008?), by then everyone will have computers that meet the minimum spec...

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by mad_onion on 03-08-2005 at 09:59 PM

nope 2006
july i think

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Caboose on 03-08-2005 at 10:09 PM

Actually, May 24, 2006 it's released to manufacturer :)

I think Microsoft will lower its minimum system specs eventually... hell, even if they don't, I'll probably still buy it. Just gotta turn off all the fancy stuff :P

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by segosa on 03-08-2005 at 10:19 PM

Oh, I see. Didn't know it was so early.

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by saralk on 03-09-2005 at 09:04 AM

most people will probably run longhorn on the minimum mobile specs.

Oh and Seggy, make my software

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by squall_leonhart69r on 03-09-2005 at 11:22 AM

i've had the pleasure with playing with an IE Beta for Longhorn, was pretty basic, and didn't have maximise support so meh,.. i trashed it

was ie 6.5 longhorn beta, i've also seen some longhorn alphas being used

now ie 7 is on the way :D

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by Pr0xY on 03-09-2005 at 04:27 PM

Looks nice... I wont be able to run it on my laptop though, I dont meet some of the minimum specs.

RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by zaidgs on 03-09-2005 at 09:13 PM

quote:
Microsoft hopes to make Longhorn what it calls a "high performance, robust, and safe operating system."
dont u find it ironical for microsoft to claim that the new windows (longhorn) is "high performance", while they are asking for higher specs!! WTF!
RE: Windows Longhorn 5xxx Preview by slipstream3d on 03-10-2005 at 04:29 AM

Guys, these "minimum specs" aren't minimum specs to RUN LONGHORN AT ALL, these are the minimum recommended configuration to run longhorn with "all the bells and whistles" (i.e. the Shader Model 2.0+ based 3d graphical user interface). Longhorn will provide "a Windows XP like experience" on hardware currently running Windows XP. Remember, there are THREE GUI levels: Aero Glass, the top of the line 3d interface, Aero, the cut down 3d interface, and Jade, the 2d, similar-to-windows-xp interface that should run just fine on your Athlon 2100+ or whatever you have.

Yay for parallel x86-32 and x86-64 builds, and instant on technology...
