Go to the 'control panel' click on system, and under the advanced tab click on 'settings' under the performance label --> than scroll down the list and check the box beside "use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop"

hope this helps :)

Do you have to enabled it each time you change a background then? There's a tool i saw when i was searching for you that said it can do it for you, so if you want the link just ask :)

edit: Here's the link... not tried it personally though

is your active desktop on? because if it is, than this will cause the problem..

i found that info here:

Right click on the desktop and go to arrange icons by and make sure that 'lock items on desktop' is unchecked.

It might have happened because you set the wallpaper from the internet by right clicking on a picture.

It's because the image is from the web...i'll download the image and then it's fine..:)

It isnt fine:S...

did you go to the link i gave u?
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305117

here is a quote from it: (do any of these things apply to you?)
"This problem may occur if you use desktop content that turns on the Active Desktop feature. For example, this problem may occur if you have a background item or desktop item that uses a transparent image or an animated GIF image, or if you set a Web page as the active desktop. This problem may also occur if you turn on the Lock Web Items on Desktop feature."

The site also gives you a solution to the problem. Try it ok? ;) hope that it will help

It is definately related to having active desktop items enabled, because I reported the problem a while back, and realised active desktop is the problem.

monster.rat was right btw...:

quote:
ght click on the desktop and go to arrange icons by and make sure that 'lock items on desktop' is unchecked.

If I turn that option on, the 'squares' around the shortcut names appear, and when I turn it off they disappear...

no, not entirely....

There are three causes for the 'problem':

Cause 1 (as Joa said):
You have "Active Desktop" enabled

Fix:
Disable "Active Desktop":
* Uncheck "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" in Control Panel > System Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings

Cause 2 (as Joa said):
You're using a PNG with a transparancy channel as a background or an animated GIF file.

Fix:
Make sure the background image doesn't have any transparancy channel or isn't an animated GIF. Note that a PNG without any transparant pixels can still have a transparancy channel though and that a GIF file can appear static, but still contain an animation. Use decent graphic programs to check these things.

Cause 3 (as monster.rat said):
You have enabled "Lock Web Items on Desktop" feature

Fix:
Disable "Lock Web Items on Desktop":
* Right click on your desktop and choose "Arrange Icons", there uncheck "Lock Web Items on Desktop"
