i have installed journal viewer and the update as the help says to do but i still cannot use the handwriting feature of msn. can someone tell me if i have to do anything else. thanks.

Did you reboot after you installed Journal Viewer? If yes, then reinstall MSN Messenger 7, it might not have recognised it. Also note that handwriting will not work on all Os'es.

For MSN Messenger 6, you need the handwriting plugin though.
