Lag in Counter Strike Source. by .Roy on 03-20-2005 at 02:01 PM

Well my friend has counter strike source and he complains to me everyday that he cant play it because its so laggy. All his other games work fine! he asked me to make this thread..

Well do you guys know whats causing his lag in counter strike? Or what might cause it?
Thanks

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by Mike on 03-20-2005 at 02:04 PM

Well, tell him to try and set all the graphic options to "Low", so the system takes less time to render...
Also, when he bought the game, there should be an insturction book that should say the system requierements...
Does he meet them? :-/

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by .Roy on 03-20-2005 at 02:10 PM

he says its only for multiplayer

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by Plik on 03-20-2005 at 03:12 PM

How fast is his internet connection.
And what are his system specs?

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by mwe99 on 03-20-2005 at 03:14 PM

Yeah its probably his internet connection speed which would be causing the lag, especially if he has lots of programs running at the same time :)

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by .Roy on 03-20-2005 at 04:39 PM

but all other programs work great on his internet connection.. why should this differ?

Then perhaps his computer isnt powerful enough to play CS: S on the settings he's on

Does he have a router? If so then the right ports are prob. not open.

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by .Roy on 03-20-2005 at 04:44 PM

well he just got a new computer a couple weeks ago. Ive seen it. It has 1000 ram and more then 2 ghz. Its not intel though. I forgot what it was. Something AMD i think.
I think he played with a setting. But which one

Verify these :

  • Graphical Options (Set them to Low)
  • The internet Connection Speed
  • The Ram that other Porgrams are eating
  • PC Specs
  • The location of the servers he plays(yep, like i'm from portugal, if i play in a australian server(per example) i will get more lag then an australian..)get my idea?

Jeeze - you guys are doing this the hard way.

Check if he's using a router or firewall. If he is then he need to open the right ports and/or allow CS: S to access the internet fully

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by .Roy on 03-20-2005 at 05:02 PM

how do u check the ports?

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by brian on 03-20-2005 at 05:09 PM

Alrighty then... how fast is your connection? If you are playing on 56k then you might as well forget it.

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by Flubber on 03-29-2005 at 01:40 PM

hmm.. i have 1.5mb (internet connection). plus i dont have a router. it might be something with the firewall i guess..
sadly i will need your help.

hmm fine i will.. well i doubt it.. anyway, can anyone try to help me ? i am not a spammer, so i won't reply here anymore, as long as someone won't help me.

thanks anyway. :P

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by auhsor on 03-31-2005 at 06:12 AM

Well I use a router and have a slower connection and a slower computer than you, so I'm not sure if I can help you, cos it works for me. I didn't need to open any ports for it to work. :S

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by .Roy on 03-31-2005 at 06:38 AM

Flubber, try reinstalling the game again. and use the default settings. Maybe you chose a wrong setting.

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by Flubber on 03-31-2005 at 03:28 PM

hmm alright. i will try it, but as i told you already, i tried to reinstall the game already - but it did not help at all..

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by lepr on 04-11-2005 at 05:28 PM

you might have already solved it by now but i'll post anyway..

try typing these into the console (to enable console go into keyboard options, press advanced):

  • cl_showfps 2  <- this will tell you your frames per second. Usually anything less than 30fps i find unplayable. cl_showfps 0 to hide it.
  • rate  <- this sets the rate at which cs updates. Broadband gamers should use at least 15000 here (rate 15000). I'm on 1.5mb and i use 20000. 20000 = 20kb/s
  • cl_smooth 0  <- this might help reduce the strain on your system

there is also something called Vertical Sync (vsync) which can be found in your graphics card options. When set to 0 or off, cs will get higher fps and might run better on your system. With vsync on, i can only get 60fps max on cs1.6, never checked on cs source.

hope this helps :)

RE: Lag in Counter Strike Source. by Flubber on 04-14-2005 at 06:20 PM

no actually i didn't fix it yet.. i didnt understood what cl_smooth 0 does..  (there suppose to be space between smooth to 0?)
anyway, if i have 1.5 mb internet, should i type: "rate 20000" ?
my fps is around 70-90 if i remember cerruntly so i dont find any prob with that. i put all my config at low even though i have a great video card. still - i have lags. anything else you can seggust me to do? :P
