Switch off File transfers? Is it possible? by Buggerlugs on 04-01-2005 at 05:34 PM

Since last November I have been looking for a method to disable MSN messenger file transfers. Ideally it'd be nice if Messenger plus had the option that could be controlled and secured via the boss protection password.

I have tried various other methods including port blocking but msn just uses whatever ports it can and it don't appear possible to stop transfers both incoming and outgoing.

Anyone have any idea? as I'm still looking.

Don't autoaccept files or send any.

I don't want to have to switch to another message network, i like msn messenger, but you can't teach users not to auto-accept files/ send any..........plus with all the exploits and msn message virus'es on the go at the moment i'd like to permanantly disable the ability to send and receive files using it.

Surely its possible???

By default files aren't accepted automaticly.

Asfor the virusses, tell MSN Messenger to scan received files with a virusscanner after they are recieved (tools > options > file transfer ..check "scan files for viruses using:" click the "browse"button and browse to the exe file of your AV program, click ok when you're done. Ofcourse make sure the virusdefinitions are up to date.

Also atm it's wise to not accept files if it's the first thing comming up in a message (virusfiles are often sent to all contacts on sign in) or when the filenames or extensions (.scr, .pif etc.) look suspicious to you.

In both, MSN Messenger and Plus! there is no option to fully block the transfer files feature.

That's weird.  I would have also thought that that is a feature people should consider.  Just not being able to recieve any files.

Suggest it to the MSN team (Microsoft) ;)
