Messenger Plus attracting Spyware & Ad-aware? by Takeshi-Jay on 04-11-2005 at 06:31 PM

I wanted to ask why does Messenger Plus attract so much Spyware and Ad-aware? When I run my Spyware scanners, a lot of it comes under Messenger Plus. Please sort this out as I do enjoy using this software and I really do not want to uninstall it.

Thank You.:)

Hello Takeshi-Jay,

Messenger Plus! comes bundled with an optional sponsor program. This means that you are never forced to install it; during installation you can choose to install it, but you can also choose not to install it.

Programs such as Microsoft AntiSpyware recognise Messenger Plus! as an adware bundler - which it technically is, the sponsor is adware only, no spyware - and they actually list all the files in the directories, all registry keys and so on. However, if you did not install the sponsor, there's nothing of the such on your computer.

If you did install the sponsor program, you can easily unstall it by following the instructions at How to uninstall ad-ware/sponsor. However, if you did not, you can simply ignore the warning (I believe Microsoft AntiSpyware's default action is actually ignore) :)

If you have further questions, don't hesitate to ask them :)

Lots of programs has messenger plus! as spyware, but trust me, it isnt true. Messenger plus! is not spyware, but has an optional adware program.

Check out this page to find out more about this optional program. http://www.msgplus.net/help_faq.php?

OK, thanks but I did not install the sponsor programms, I chose not to. And yet, I still get Ad-aware and crap when I scan my PC.

I use: Ad-aware SE Personal, pc Orion, NoAdware and Spybot.

Then this isnt messenger plus!'s fault.
Either your anti-spyware program is wrong or you did install the the sponsor.

Or the adware came from another source.

I did not install the sponsor as I was told before hand that I would get viruses from porn, which I DO NOT WANT! May this be true, i do not know, but I gurantee that I did not install the sponsor program and have a look at the spyware scanners I use.

Maybe post a screenshot of the spyware found.

The sponsor program has been modified so it contains no adult content. Also note that the sponsor program contains no viruses. It adds desktop shortcuts, favorites and an Internet Explorer toolbar.

I think that what the spyware program found was not the sponsor, but the actual messenger plus files as many programs think plus is bad.

Adaware should not detect Plus! in any way if you choose not to install the sponsor.

only anti virus programs find msg plus! bad. But he used a spyware scan program. Which should have found this. But maybe your search also includes an anti-virus. What program do you use anyway?

Here attached is a screenshot of a recent scan from my Spyware scanner.

I do realise spyware does come from other sources, blah blah, but I wanted to know why from Messenger Plus as I had the chance to find out. How the hell do I get rid of the rest anyhow? They keep popping up!

As i was saying, none of these things from the screenshot are related to messenger plus! except the one called messenger plus which are the actual files, not the adware.

The program that stated Messenger Plus was pcOrion. The others do detect a lot of spyware recently, and adaware.

Hmm try searching spyware with a different spyware program like spybot search and destroy.
if you also get messenger plus popping up there then its definetly messenger plus! If not then its just ur program stating that messenger plus is spyware even though it isnt. Basically like monstor.rat said.

RE: Messenger Plus attracting Spyware & Ad-aware? by Tasha on 04-11-2005 at 07:08 PM

The Messenger Plus! that comes up on there, is as monster.rat said, the actual files, not spyware or adware.

Having Kazza on your computer is likely to cause you to get a lot of spyware as well. Fomr some of those things, it seems like you are getting them off websites you visit. None of the other things are realted to Messenger Plus! at all, or else they would have been reported before.

I think you should revise websites you have been on recently, and other things you have installed/modified before jumping to the conclusions that Messenger Plus! is the route of all your spyware/adware/virus problems.

Will do, thanks guys. By the way, I had Kazaa installed a long time ago but I had deleted that program. Why do I still get them popping up?

try using a different program for searching spyware.
go to download.com and download either, spybot search and destroy or/and ad-aware

These are more well known and probobly wont find these kind of errors there.

and did those programs find messenger plus! as spyware?
RE: Messenger Plus attracting Spyware & Ad-aware? by Zephyr on 04-11-2005 at 08:42 PM

Takeshi-Jay said that it was PCOrion that has messenger plus registered as bundleware.

I don't think that ad-aware and spybot detect messegner plus as a threat.

I never saw spybot s&d detecting plus! at all

RE: Messenger Plus attracting Spyware & Ad-aware? by Takeshi-Jay on 04-13-2005 at 07:58 PM

No, but ever since I had downloaded Messenger Plus, my spyware count on Ad-aware and Spybot has increased by double.
