Try searching for POP3 in google or another search engine. U'll find loads of info.

Post Office Protocol v3
The most common method e-mail clients use to download e-mails from the server. The client logs into the server, and downloads each message in turn, saving it to the local machine. This means that, once viewed, the messages no longer reside on the server.
