File Transfer failing ? by jusa_98 on 04-13-2005 at 07:27 PM

I just downloaded the LATEST version of MSN Messenger and Messenger Plus! and ever since I did the updates I get the following message when someone tries to send me a file transfer:

(name) tried to send you a file (filename.ext). This file has been blocked because it is potentially unsafe.

I have checked the options in both MSN and Messenger Plus!  but can't find anything to halt this.  This only occoured on when I made the updates.  And am unsure if it's MSN Messenger itself or Plus! ... Any ideas?

This is quite annoying, these files are no risk.

I do not have a firewall setup or anti virus software interfering.  As I said I only got the problems when I made the update.

I run spybot often to delete issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this one has really stunned me, even after 10+ years of Internet Experience.

I am running Windows XP Professional

Thanks for your time in advance.

:)

you can get stuffplug to be recieve those files

For Stuffplug http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=42725

The new msn messenger 7.0.0777 has a new feature of blocking certain files to stop instant messenger viruses from spreading. These include:

ade .adp .app .asp .bas .bat .cer .chm .cmd .com .cpl
.crt .csh .exe .fxp .hlp .hta .inf .ins .isp .its .js .jse .ksh .lnk
.mad .maf .mag .mam .maq .mar .mas .mat .mau .mav
.maw .mda .mdb .mde .mdt .mdw .mdz .msc .msi .msp .mst
.ops .pcd .pif .prf .prg .pst .reg .scf .scr .sct .shb .shs .tmp
.url .vb .vbe .vbs .vsd .vsmacros .vss .vst .vsw .ws .wsc .wsf .wsh

Yeah stuffplug is what i would recommend as well. In the new MSNM7, microsoft have decided to block loads of file extensions for security reasons after many msn viruses were going round and being executed by people through msn.

Okay I can understand this but why in hell would they just not give us an option to allow these files or not.  Or able to control this by the user a bit more.  A box where we put the file extensions we do not want and a allow list for exceptions.

Nah instead of Microsoft considering making things easier they have made a mess.  No files since I made the update I can get. :(  Instead I need to install another plugin to allow it.  Talk about a real pain in the ....

Thanks for your replies, very helpful!
