did you try to go through the wizard again?

tools > Audio/visual Tuning wizard

Edit:
did you make any recent changes to your computer around the time the audio stopped working? so added or removed hardware, did any updates for drivers etc. even the installation or update of some programs can cause problems. if u did than try to reverse them and see it that helps

if its not due to having two different verstions of MSN messenger, it may be a connection problem... disabling the "QoS Packet Scheduler" might help :-/

Edit: sorry my directions for that were kinda vague before here i fixed them.

1. go to the Control Pannel
2. Go to your Network Connections
3. Right click connection through which you connect to the Internet (If you are connected via a router or LAN, this will be the "Local Area Connection")
3. For a "Local Area Connection" make sure you are on the "General" page of the "Properties" configuration. For all other connections click on the "Networking" tab.
4. Click off the "QoS Packet Scheduler" check.
5. Restart the computer

Even if your record fader in the windows audio mixer isn't muted and is turned to full volume... your soundcard has it's own mixer: I had this problem too, microphone fader was open, I setted everything in the msn options but nothing. When I went to the record settings of my audiocard i found after some clicking a volume-tab, and what did I got? another little mixer just for recording, with stereo-mix, cdplayer, micro, and line, straight from my realtek audiocard software. And for some reason the mic was muted there... but these 4 input meters come together in de microphone fader in windows who wasn't muted at all... however it took me some time to find it. I thought the volumetab would just allow you to set the gain. The software of my card is integrated in the windows interface, not a explicit exe, that's the reason i had to search a bit.I know every pc has it's own software etc but it might help you to search further in the settings... Also some programs mute sound automaticlly and if it crashes it stays that way... good luck(y)
