Trojan in plus? by love_spreads on 04-19-2005 at 10:26 AM

According to the father, a trojan was brought down with plus! from lop.com. Any ideas what's happened as it's completely fucking the laptop over. I did NOT install the sponsor program. Thanks in advance.

Hi love_spreads. You must of installed the sponsor program for that to of happened. Or you installed another program which installs LOP.

You can read this thread on how to uninstall the Plus! sponsor: [Link]

the father? Is that like an anti-virus? If so then it might have recognised Msg Plus! as a virus. Some programs do that even though its 100% incorrect.

If you downloaded Messenger Plus! from msgplus.net and refused to install the sponsor, then you got nothing else but Plus! itself. If "the father" is an antivirus/antispyware program, I suggest you email its creators about their mistake.

RE: Trojan in plus? by user27089 on 04-19-2005 at 03:29 PM

I think "the father" is in fact her his/her father...

I can assure you that messenger plus! contains no trojans, it is merely a mistake by some of the antivirus companies, such as AVG Anti-virus that thinks that it is a trojan, when in fact, it is not.

RE: Trojan in plus? by new to msn on 04-20-2005 at 07:09 AM

How do you download Messenger Plus without downloading the sponsor program? I hope someone can help me!
thanks very much.

RE: Trojan in plus? by user27089 on 04-20-2005 at 07:11 AM

YOu just download the normal installer, but when running the installer and you get to this area:

you press "I refuse..." The sponsor will not be installed and you can carry on installing messenger plus! fully.

Just to clear it up, when I said "the father", I meant "my father". Stupid local ideolect.

I suggest you ask your father then where did he get the idea that it is a Trojan.

And many Anti-Viruses do see Msg Plus! As a trojan (even though its not). But if you didnt install the sponsor program then you are safe. You can tell that to your father ;)
RE: Trojan in plus? by new to msn on 04-22-2005 at 01:56 PM

I tried what "traxor" said, and it didn't work. I got the virus...and luckily I got rid of it, but my friend in the other hand it messed up his computer. msgplus is just a waste of time. in my opinion it is just a way for people to hack into your computer, its useless

RE: Trojan in plus? by Anubis on 04-22-2005 at 02:01 PM

When you have installed Plus with the sponsor, you can just go to uninstall Plus, when it first comes up to uninstall you can get an option to uninstall the sponsor. Just uninstall the sponsor from the option there and it is gone.
The sponsor program, I assure you is just a little bit of optional adware that will do no damage, not spying on your computer, no hacking to your computer and no virus!

If it did contain this and everyone got it, it would seem logical that there would be loads of warnings about the software, that haven't been proven as wrong. If you still believe there is a virus in Messenger Plus, why don't you e-mail McAfee, Norton or go on another technical help forum and ask. Not hundreds of people would actively lie about it. And there's loads of people who use Plus, chances are you will have a contact or know someone who uses it without problems.

i think this happened to me......my homepage got changed to prescriptionmedicines.com

RE: Trojan in plus? by ShawnZ on 04-22-2005 at 11:12 PM

The sponser is Completly Optional and is Not spyware or a trojan but rather just harmless adware.

The sponser WILL:

  • Change your homepage to MySearchNow.com
  • Install an Internet Exploer Toolbar labeled "C2Media"
  • Add icons to your desktop and Favourites Menu
  • Change your default search engine to MySearchNow.com

The sponser WILL NOT:
  • Install Trojans or any other type of virus
  • Allow anyone to hack you or use your computer
  • Send any information about you to any server (Such as your name, address, credit card number, or other personally identifiable information)
  • Track anything you do on your computer

Some antivirus or antispyware programs usually either Detect the sponser when it is not installed or Detect the sponser as a virus or trojan. However, both these accusations are Incorrect and should be disregarded.

I think you are getting a Trojan confused with a hijacker...:S

Hijackers boost the homepage to something you didn't accept or ask for,< like a pop up>. This happens on poorly moderated websites like porn and such...:pound:

Trojans can enter the same way but usually are unexpectedly run user end... meaning you would have to run it to install it in your comp. It leaves a vulnerability like a worm allowing remote access to an unspecified user, allowing them access up to and including the remote execution of files. As well as any sensitive info stored on your comp like passwords and credit card info.

:plus2:Mess+ is not a hijacker as if you install with the sponser you will:

RE: Trojan in plus? by ShawnZ on 04-23-2005 at 01:46 AM

I forgot to mension :$:P The toolbar occasionaly causes IE to open popups. But that's nothing really.

Now you are getting a hijacker confused with a trojan.
Basicly the Messenger Plus!' sponsor program is a "browser hijacker", but not a trojan.
And if you do not accept to install the sponsor, you get a clean version of MsgPlus! without adware/sponsor.

Definition of "Browser hijacker":
Applications that attempt to take control over a user's home page or desktop icons, resetting them to a pre-determined website destination.

Well actually I am expieriencing the same kind of.

Its not only you and him. Its the program. Everyone with Microsoft Anti-spyware has the exact problem when having Msg Plus! On his computer.
And its not only Microsoft Anti-Spyware with this problem. Those companies are just too lazy to change the Msg Plus! Entery. Only if you have the sponsor then it can call Msg Plus! what it is. But it isnt a trojan.

I stupidly installed the sponsor for messenger plus! and I can't get rid of it....I'ts not on the add/remove programme list and it won't go away when I try to uninstall it from messenger plus! Adaware doesn't pick it up...neither does spybot.
Anyone able to give me any help??

Have you used any adware removal tools to try and remove the sponsor? Because they will corrupt the sponsor and make it hard to remove.
Try re-installing plus with the sponsor, then using the plus unistaller to remove it straight after.
