[TUTORIAL] Background music on your MSN Space! :) by XICO2KX on 04-20-2005 at 01:25 AM

Hi! :)
Not many people know about this, but it's possible to add a background music to your Blog on MSN Spaces! :D

I've wrote this small tutorial for someone at the mess.be forum, but because it's a pretty cool trick, and only a few people know about it, I though about sharing this here with you too! ;)

Here it goes... :P

1) Upload your song to some web host... e.g.: http://www.myhost.com/mysong.mp3
(check this site for some suggestions about where you can upload your file to... but you might consider using a small file or converting it first to a lower quality or to WMA before uploading, because it could take a long time to load it later on your blog otherwise)

2) Put your song's URL on the code bellow...
(just replace http://www.myhost.com/mysong.mp3 with your own link)

code:
<img loop=infinite dynsrc="http://www.myhost.com/mysong.mp3" width=0 height=0 border=0>
3) Copy that code to the clipboard
(select text and hit CTRL+C)

4) On your MSN Space, go to the "Edit Blog Entry" section
(go to "Blog -> Add entry" , or edit some existing entry)

5) Click the "Insert link" button
(the 3rd button from the right with a globe on it)

6) Paste the code there
(if the code is still on the clipboard, just press CTRL+V)

7) Click "Save"
(after that, if everything goes well, you should start earing your song by now)

8) Now a tricky part... you should see "http:// " highlighted... now delete "http://" *BUT* leave the white space just next to it!!! If you delete it, the song will stop playing!
(you can put the cursor on the beggining of the line and hit the "Delete" key untill you delete the "http://" part... the white space, in case you're wondering, is a box with no border and width=0 and height=0, containing the code to play your song ... this will make it "invisible" inside your post, and resulting on a "background music" effect)

9) Write the rest of your post normally... hit "Publish Entry", and...

10) Enjoy your new cool musical blog!!! :)

Hope this comes in handy to someone!  ;)
If you want to see how all this results in the end, just check this example space! :)

P.S.: Please keep in mind that this only works when using Internet Explorer because of some sort of ActiveX scripts stuff! If you're using another browser (FireFox, Opera, etc.), you won't be able to ear any music... :(

Thanks for posting. Just one question though. How come this doesn't work in Mozilla Firefox? Do I need to get a plugin of some sort? *-)

If that's right, the reason it doesn't work is because FF doesn't support activex as he said.

Hey do you also know how to or how i could strip my space of everything make it simple, or use a script to display it diffrently on my website.

my site seems to be going weird atm (damn .tk) but its the niles lair link on http://fukafly.anonymousjon.co.uk and i want to display a simple version of my MSN Space on there.

Either that or have another Blog that can mimic an MSN Space or ssomething :S

One question

Can you use MSN Spaces on a non-microsoft address as long as it's linked to a .NET passport?

RE: [TUTORIAL] Background music on your MSN Space! :) by PureLegend on 05-05-2005 at 07:10 PM

Tried everything.
I'm using IE6,MSN7 and I'm using

http://www.freewebs.com/magicboxofdata/Space%20Mu...ruise%20Easily.mp3

Nothing! Any ideas?

RE: [TUTORIAL] Background music on your MSN Space! :) by steVenB on 05-05-2005 at 11:29 PM

I cant seem to get it working. :S

RE: [TUTORIAL] Background music on your MSN Space! :) by mwe99 on 05-05-2005 at 11:56 PM

Try not to use spaces in your html name, otherwise sometimes it doesnt like it

try natasha_beddingfield etc

Can anyone recommend a site that allows this? Not just a list a specific one that has worked?

Thanks

And that is, in one sentence, one of the main reasons why Firefox > all other browsers.

I do NOT want to visit a webpage and have background music I cannot control play, interrupting what I am listening to in Winamp.

Just untick the play sounds in the advanced tab. I have Maxthon and it lets you control a lot more of what happens when you surf. Firefox is crap. But lets not turn this into a which browser is better thread. I hate those. Carry on!

Well, that's wrong...

It works because of a flaw in Internet Explorer. It should not be working at all, since an mp3 file is not a picture. everything in an img tag should be interpreted as a picture, if it is not a picture (gif, jpg, png) a red cross should have been shown.

This isn't because ActiveX....

And that is indeed how the vast majority of the web users feel like. Background music is in 99,99999999% of all cases very annoying. (especially when the loop is infinite and when the sound is that loud as on your msn spaces blog!!!!)

RE: [TUTORIAL] Background music on your MSN Space! :) by mundox on 05-10-2005 at 06:45 AM

XICO2KX, thx for the info :) now my space has music :D:D:D yaaay (one loop though... infinite is very annoying...)
