I'll stick with 6.2 by Improfane on 04-20-2005 at 05:35 PM

Yesterday I installed Msn Messenger 7 over 6.2 - my smilies were erased and 7 I just don't like.

Uninstalled 7 and reinstalled 6.2 but its preventing me from signing in - The dialog states that 'You must update'

Are there any work arounds this ? I had 6.2 a while AFTER 7 was released and never got this message.

Is there some sort of patch, loader or plugin to prevent FORCED updating?

no. There's a reason for forced updates.

Really, I advice that you update; there's security updates that Microsoft have put in for a reason. Even though the risk is most likely not going to affect you in any way, it's still best to. Any workarounds are illegal and also would have high chances of other consequences (since it's just a toast that is triggered by their server).

If you don't have it installed, then it wouldn't tell you to update. It's not a windows core component that needs updating.

The Updates are for a newer 6.2 version. :)

Indeed I was mistaken, Thankyou Tasha -  the update was never the Msn Messenger 7 update, it was just a 6.2 update.

I'm downloading the (newer) installer of 6.2 from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?F...FA1&displaylang=en
As I want the installer on my computer for future use.
UPDATE: The 6.2 here is actually also OUT OF DATE, but the only place I could get the newer version was to update. Update and you'll find the NEW VERSION of 6.2 in: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MSN Messenger 6.2.0205
as a file: MsnMsgs.Msi

The installer of 6.2 I had before must have been an older 6.2

Thanks again everyone for your support.

A Pokemon fan!

On mess.be i remember them saying you can change the version number with a hex editor, then it won't think it's 6.2 version and won't force you to update.

But I won't go into that.

If you just took like 5 secs of your life and look above your post you will see that there is no forceing update.
You can still use MSN Messenger 5 without changing anything for gods sake

Uninstall MSN Messenger from ADD /REMOVE  an then go to START > RUN > an type REGEDIT, an then go to HKEY_CURRENT-USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSFT/MSNMESSENGER <-- an delete that KEY

then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/MSNMESSENGER <-- an delete that Key , an  exit REGISTRY an reboot the system  an then  redownload 6.2
