Signing in in problem with MSN Messenger 7. by gatepass007 on 04-22-2005 at 07:13 PM

Hey guyz,
This new MSN Messenger (final version) is killing me. Every time I try to sign that shows me that the service is currently unavailable. When I try to use the connection troubleshooter then that says the problem is with Zone Alarm. So, I have uninstalled Zone Alarm. Still I can't sign in. I'm getting the same error message although I am not getting error message about Zone Alarm. Some times ago I installed the older version (6.2) .. that worked fine. Why MSN Messenger 7 doesn't work in my PC? What's wrong?

Please somebody help me. :(

first of all, you did not need to uninstall zonealarm

you can re-intall zonealarm firewall. they only thingyou would need to to do is ENABLE internet access to msn messenger through your firewall.

To do this open Zonealarm and go to the 'program control' panel, then click the 'programs' tab. Scroll down the list of programs until you find MSN. Left click on the question mark in the 'server/internet' section of your application's row. Change the setting to 'allow.' :cheesy: this should fix your problem.

RIGHT NOW, the problem may be with the XP firewall (unless you did not restart your computer after the uninstalling of zolealarm).

Well, My windows XP's firewall service is disable. I've installed Zone Alarm and MSN Messenger's permission is
set as you say. Actually that setting was ALLOWD before you say.  I was having problem and still having problem. Now I am using 6.2 version. That works fine. Just can't understand the problem with version 7. :@

try going here and following the directions.

EDIT:

Also, try this:

in the msn main window, go to -> Options -> Connections -> advanced connection options -> uncheck all 4 boxes (TCP, SOCKS 4 SOCKS 5 HTTP Proxy)

also, i just want you to know that even when you get a message saying:
The following programs might prevent a connection to MSN Messenger.
-> Zone Labs Zone Alarm

it just means that the troubleshooter recognized that you have this firewall installed, it does not mean that it is a direct problem with zolealarm.

Do you have a router with a firewall on or another firewall?
If so, make sure that you have either enabled uPnP, or have opened outgoing TCP Port 1863.

Well, I use internet with proxy. Without proxy I can't browse. MSN Messenger now says I might have problem with my internet connection or with proxy. With IE I cant browse well. Only Messenger is showing me that error.
**Messenger's HTTP proxy and IE's proxy is same.

I have contacted with MSN Messenger Support. I've got a reply from them. And at last I am now able to sign in with MSN Messenger 7. I'm posting here the reply I've got ...

....................................................................
When you try to sign in to MSN Messenger after an upgrade, you may experience one of the following issues:

* Although you can connect to the Internet, you receive an error message that states that you do not have Internet connectivity.
* The error may say that you are behind a firewall and you may not have internet connectivity.
* The Connectivity Troubleshooter opens.
* You receive an error message that states that you have an invalid user name and password.
* You receive another sign-in error message.

The following conditions may apply:

* You have installed a firewall that is preventing access to MSN Messenger.
* The proxy settings are incorrect.
* The stored sign-in credentials are incorrect.

Try the following solutions in the order they are listed:

1. If you have received an error message that states that your user name and password are not valid, go to step 8.

2. Enable MSN Messenger through the firewall. Refer to “Firewall Enabling” document for steps appropriate to the customer’s firewall.

3. Try to sign into Messenger again.

4. Clear the HTTP proxy settings in MSN Messenger:
For Messenger Version 7:
i. Start MSN Messenger.
ii. Click Tools and then click Options
iii. Click Connection, and then click Advanced Settings under Connection Settings.
iv. Clear the proxy settings in the Advanced Connection window. To do so:
1. Delete the entries under SOCKS Version 4.
2. Delete the entries under SOCKS Version 5.
3. Delete the entries under HTTP Proxy Server.
4. Click OK, and then click OK again to save the settings.

5. Clear the proxy setting in Internet Explorer:
a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
c. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
d. Clear the Automatically detect settings check box.
e. Click OK, and then click OK again.

6. Try to sign into Messenger again.

7. Reregister the security dlls that may be conflicting with MSN Messenger. Follow the steps for your operating system:
a. Microsoft Windows XP
i. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK: %windir%\system32\REGSVR32 softpub.dll initpki.dll wintrust.dll.
b. Note Three windows that state that the commands were successfully executed will appear. This may take several seconds. Therefore, make sure that you wait to receive all three messages before you continue.

8. Sign in to MSN Messenger.
a. Click File, and then click Sign In.
b. In the .NET Messenger Sign-in window, enter your user ID and password.
c. To set up Messenger to sign you in automatically, select the Sign me in automatically check box or the Remember my name and password on this computer check box.
d. Click OK.
