Alert via e-mail when a contact goes on-line by webguide on 04-24-2005 at 08:00 PM

Hello everybody!
I'd be very interested in such a function:
to be alerted via e-mail (or even via sms) when a specified contact goes on-line.
I'll promote your software to everybody if you will support such a feature!

That sounds doable. I'm not sure weather any program has any of these features already afaik there is none. I think a bot would be needed for this:^) I'm not a programmer though so I can't do it:P.

it would cram up smpt servers, say if 5 contacts sign in at the same time,  etc, and 1 million ppl use this feature, to send to hotmail, hotmail mite not b able to handle it etc

Good point.
Maybe someone could do a thing that sends you a message which gives you an event log of the last, for example, 10 minutes to your mobile or something like that.

I like the idea and think it would be good, but haven't a clue how i would do that so i can't make it sorry.

Do you have any idea how many e-mail messages pass through the Hotmail servers every minute? I believe it's somewhere in the millions, maybe tens or even hundreds of millions. So I think Hotmail can cope.

First of all, thanks to all of you for having answered me so quickly.
In fact I believe that such a function should not overload smtp servers, because I don't think of general notify when each contact logs on, but only when specified contacts log on.
Moreover, if the user needs to specify smtp server, it should not be only hotmail servers to be interested.
And about sms notify, you could set up a partnership with a global telco carrier to support paying sms notify...

I thought about the sms thing...you need to make an agreement with all the telecom companys you wanted to have members of...so i think it's not doable, in the sms point of view...
