From Engadget

We’re not so sure this was the kind of demo we’d have liked from Sony’s, Toshiba’s, and IBM’s much hyped and lauded Cell processor, but Toshiba ran a live demo of the chip wherein it decoded 48 simultaneous standard-def MPEG-2 video streams, which were then projected onto a 1,920 x 1,080 (aka 1080i HD) display. That’s great in sticking to their plan to also carve the microprocessor an embedded multimedia powerhouse niche, but we’re gonna remain aporetic until we see just how many polygons this thing’s really going to push.

For those who don't know - the Cell processor was developed in association with SONY to be (among other thing) the next generation processor used in the Playstation 3.

Merh, there is no need for it to be so damn small, it's ludacrisly small to be honest, it's just a stupid idea...

Why so small? Why can't it just be normal with the same speed, they're just showing off...

Anyway, IMO, XBOX 2 will be better, Microsoft have already released that it will have 3x 3.2GHz Processors in it anyway...

The Xbox 360 will be the best of the computer world, the PS3 will be the best of console engineering.

The PS3 will have 2x 4.6 Ghz Cell processors vs Xbox 360's 3x 3.0 Ghz (not 3.2) processors.

And it's smalls o they can keep the system a bit more compact with the coolant systems they need to use (the cell processors run at 80 degrees C).

That's the main problem with the ps2... it's one of the noisiest things ever, it gets overly dusty aswell because of all of the holes that are all over it...

I just hope the xbox 2 and the ps3 won't trap too much dust...

Well if the PS3 will be noisy, I'm sure the Xbox 360 will be just as bad :P

And by the way - Mhz/Ghz aren't the only thing that matters in a processor.

So the PS3 will be 9.2GHz and Xbox 360 will be 9.0 GHz

Whats the current speed for PS2 and Xbox?
And anyone no that TV program where Nintendo and Xbox will be releasing their future consoles...? Something like E3 on MTV or something?

1) No, you can't stack processor powers, it's 3x 3.0 Ghz and 2x 4.6 Ghz
2) Xbox is 733 mhz and PS2 is 322 Mhz (or around there)

E3 = Electronics Entertainment Expo = the biggest gaming expo in North America = WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN?!?
MTV = Music network.

The PS3 and Evolution will be revealed at E3 on May 17th, but Microsoft is getting a jump on them by showing their Xbox 360 on MTV on May 12th at 9:00 PM (or 9:30 PM - I don't remember) EST.
RE: Cell processor > * by wj on 04-25-2005 at 04:51 PM

I'll be at E3, I'll make sure to take some pictures of them for you guys and get the full stats.

Any wow are those systems going to be HOT and EXPENSIVE. If they've got dual processors at those speeds, They'll be in the thousands. Oh how I LOVE rumors...

I just love that the xbox 2 is slated has PPC processors in it.

How do you know that there isn't some crazy console that's going to come out, it's highly probably to be honest :p...

Atari 3000 ...

XBOX 2 is rumoured to cost around $299...

:o I forgot about the Atari 360 Evolution PRO DS:

And ya - the Xbox 360 won't break the $350 barrier.

Exactly, You cant even buy a motherboard that supports two processors for that much. considering the way the x-box is built, they would lose TONS of money doing that, Besides, I'd just scavange the procs out of em anyways :-P

I'd bet neither of them will have procs faster then 2ghz.

owned.

[edit] yeah i suppose this needs content. i honsetly dont see them making a profit with multiple highspeed processors :/

So very true. For example: an AMD Athlon running at 2.4GHz can outperform a Pentium 4 running 2.8GHz.

As for the whole heat/noise/dust issue, you really think they'd develop a chip that runs that hot and not come up with decent cooling? If the make the intelligent desicion and use copper heatsinks, they'll be quieter than you think. As for dust, open your PC: the dust in there could fill a hoover bag. Comparatively, consoles are uber-clean.

And cost won't be a big deal. PS1 on release: £300. PS2 on release: £300. Get the feeling PS3 on release will be £300? SImilar for the XBox.
RE: Cell processor > * by Pyroteq on 04-26-2005 at 09:28 AM

ill be getting an Xbox 2.
I currently own a ps2 and an xbox, i favor my xbox.. Although ive needed to replace its shitty drive..

Anyone know if the X2 will be backwards compatible yet? I heard it wouldnt be. Also the hard drive would be dependant upon weather the ps3 had one (Xbox lost money on every console it sold due to the expense of the hard drive and pressures of keeping up with competitors) But they make it back on games..
