i also had this problem.... well tell him to give his pc proper cooling...
my pc shuts down when i put more load on my pc (while playing game) and if i didnt allowed proper cooling then it automatically shuts down.. but when i give it proper axhaust then it keeps on working to hours and hours.....
may be ur frnd also facing this problem because of not proper cooling ( as i was)

It's most likely hardware rather than a virus..

Just a suggestion, but have you tried letting the computer run in safe mode and idle to test whether or not it's an overheating issue?

Usually viruses display some kind of wierd activity or a message or somthing, But its a possibility

Reccomend him to:
Do a virus scan
Clean the insides of his pc (Remove dust, etc)
Check all power cables.

And if its still not working you probly have a problem in one of your hardware components. Ive seen PSU's suddenly just fail and do that to a pc.

Once I stupidly messed with the bios resulting in my PC shutting down at 2 am every day. Make sure you haven't done anything with it (the bios).
