Custom sound feature error report thread by Sunshine on 04-30-2005 at 03:31 PM

Sounds won't upload
Those who have trouble sending/uploading a new custom sound to the server and recieve the error: "An error occured while contacting the server, please try again later", please see "Personal sound problem".

No errormessage
Sounds don't play (when you receive one, they do play when you send one) and you don't get a message/link in your conversationscreen when you receive a sound.

Solution:
- Make sure you don't filter the word "says" (wordfilter: Plus > Preferences > Instant Messages > Word Filtering)
For more info about this see: "CookieRevised's reply to Custom Emotion Sounds & Word Filters"
- Also make sure everything is configured correctly (see points below Error message ).

Error message
"An error occured while contacting the server, please try again later. If the problem persists, check your security settings."

Incase you can't reach the soundserver (see above errormessage / e.g can't get random sounds) and it's like that for longer than say 1 or 2 days, try the following:

1. See if you can get sounds if you disable your firewall. If it works then you should check your firewall settings (allow access to the net, place http://sounds.msgplus.net in the list of trusted websites).
2. If you use an Adblocking/site restricting program (e.g Adsubtract), turn that off and see if it works. If so you need to place http://sounds.msgplus.net in the list of websites - inside the adblocking program - to bypass the filtering.
3. Check your hosts file: for information on how to do that see: Connection refused when contacting www.msgplus.net, in this case look for sounds.msgplus.net remove that and save your hosts file.
4. See if you can view: http://sounds.msgplus.net/
5. Try to ping the sounds server:
Go to start >  Run > type: "cmd" without the quotes (or "command" when using windows 98/ME) <enter>
in the command prompt window type: "ping sounds.msgplus.net" (without quotes) <enter>

If you can do point 4 and 5, please try the following:

Go to start >  Run > type: "cmd" without the quotes (or "command" when using windows 98/ME) <enter>
In the command prompt window, type: "tracert sounds.msgplus.net" (without quotes) <enter>
Now right click and select "Mark"
now click and drag the cursor to select the text that was output by the program tracert
Right click again to copy the text to your clipboard
Reply to this thread and paste the contents of that tracert.

Also state your:
- OS (windows 98/ME/XP)
- Browser (including versionnumber)
- Connection type

Posting this information will help the soundserver admins analyse the problems. Thanks in advance.

By making this thread i hope we can get all information (and possible solutions ofcourse) inhere for easy reference and comparison.

Thanks goes to all providing info and solutions (i will keep this post updated)
Soundserver admins: feel free to edit this post

I don't see anything wrong in the tracert (no time outs), thanks for posting your results. Would you be so kind to also state your OS, browser and connection type?

That was quick! Just did. Thanks.

Just saw :D
I see you use FireFox. Did you uninstall IE by any chance? You should not do this, if you did please reinstall.

Go into your browser and do the following:
go to tools > internetoptions > security (tab)
click "trusted sites" and add http://sounds.msgplus.net (uncheck "serververification - https - ...") inthere.

Now try again if you can get/send/hear sounds.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by serendipity on 05-01-2005 at 10:34 AM

Still have IE.Did as you said but nothing :(
I should face it and give up.

Don't give up yet, just keep an eye on this thread ;)
Could you state the IE version that's on your comp (in IE: help > info/about) and the encryption (...bits)?
RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by serendipity on 05-01-2005 at 10:57 AM

It's 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2
Dont know about encryption though( dont know where to look). You are most to kind but lets face it.

Encryption/coding is right underneath the versionnumber (probably 128-bits as you have the same version as me) ;)

Even if we can't solve your problem now, it doesn't mean we aren't able to in the future. The more info we get, the bigger the chance we can determine what the problem is.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by serendipity on 05-01-2005 at 11:12 AM

You were right.It's Cipher strength:128-bit
This is a sound I have created but doesn't seem to play when i sent it to my contacts that use plus (although I can hear it and I dont get a sending error when sent). And you were also right about getting the most info as possible.I just wonder am I one of the few who cant use this option?:(   Thanks again.

I just tested your sound and it works fine. Also checked if the sound is on the soundserver and it is:
Hash: #DF1C95989FA2
Name: Let the sunshine in
Category: music
Used: 10 x
Private sound: yes
Sound is banned: no
(note: you only have to mark sounds private if you don't want it to come up when someone clicks "get random sound")

If you don't get an error and it plays fine for you then the trouble isn't on your side but on your contacts side. Did they tell Plus! to not autoplay sounds: Plus > Preferences > General > Sounds (tab)..under custom emotion sounds, is "automaticly play custom sounds when ready" unticked at those contacts side? If so, to listen to it they have to click the link in the conversationwindow.

Again: aslong as you don't get an errormessage, it's working fine at your side ;)
RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by serendipity on 05-01-2005 at 11:48 AM

They are all ticked except the last one 'play sounds when my status is set to busy'. How come then I cant here the sounds they are sending me also? It's weird.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Sunshine on 05-01-2005 at 11:54 AM

I wasn't talking about at your side, ask your contacts if they have it set that way (unticked the one i spoke about).

As you set it you should be able to hear the sound, exept when your status is "busy". If you click the link in conversationwindow after they send a sound to you, does it play? If yes and you want them to autoplay again: untick "automaticly play custom sounds when ready", exit MSNM, restart MSNM..tick that option again and restart MSNM once more.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by serendipity on 05-01-2005 at 12:05 PM

[Messenger Plus!Sound] - Data{DF1C95989FA2} - Let the sunshine in   this is what my contact see but doesnt show any link to sound.
I dont get any message or link when my contact tries to send a sound to me. All boxes are checked also.

This sometimes happens when the server is too busy. Does this happen everytime?

This is weird. Wich MSNM (exact version: help > about) are you using and did you patch it in any way?

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by serendipity on 05-01-2005 at 12:29 PM

Yes it happens all the time(from both sides).
I use msn 7.0.0777 messenger plus 3.52.130 (my contact the same)and the plugins stuffplug 2.2.119 and hopper. But I only have intalled these two the past two days. The problem was from the start of the new feature of msgplus.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by CookieRevised on 05-01-2005 at 03:43 PM

serendipity, do you or your contacts, by any chance, use the word filtering in Messenger Plus!? And if so, do you filter on the word "says"? If so, than there is your problem; Filtering on the word "says" can cause such problems ...

(filtering on "says" is never a good thing and not recommended at all)

see "CookieRevised's reply to Custom Emotion Sounds & Word Filters"

----

other than this, and other than the things said in this thread (make sure nothing is blocking the servers) I have no idea (yet)...

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by serendipity on 05-01-2005 at 04:27 PM

We have both unchecked this option. Now I can hear my contact's sounds but he cant hear mine.Whose fault is it now? We are getting there!:)

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by CookieRevised on 05-01-2005 at 04:42 PM

Make absolutely sure he DID remove the "says" filtering and that he isn't running any anti-something software that blocks sites, or that he has configured his "security" software in a decent way (like a firewall, anti-spyware monitors, internet security monitors, etc... etc...), also let him check out his HOSTS file (more info here on that).

Let him read this entire thread...

-----

EDIT: Glad it worked out ;)

HELP!!!! what info do you need?

Im running the latest plus n msn. I have XP pro SP2. I also have   McAfee SecurityCenter 2005

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Sunshine on 06-07-2005 at 12:21 PM

Thrill, were those sounds already on the server when they send them to you..or are they new?

What happens if they send the same sound again?

Is that person in your contactlist?
You can only recieve/hear em from ppl in your contactlist if you got "only ppl in my allowlist.." enabled/ticked in tools > options > privacy. You can hear em from all if you untick that option.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Thrill on 06-07-2005 at 02:20 PM

Hi again there sounds from your server downloaded to ppls list.. No matter what i have tried they wont play or download..

So im in a convo with a friend, I send a sound (from server) one I downloaded and added to my list. In the convo box that sound plays find on both pc's.. Great! Then my friend sends back a sound.. thats the problem, I dont get to here it? I get a download link saying try again! so I hit the link! and nothing.. nothing happens.

Tried re-installing both Plus! and MSN stopped all my net protection, firewall, popup blocking, anti-virus.. and I get the same thing?

This is not just a one off! this is happening 100% all the time at any time of the day or night and its with every person I have tried!

As you asked, Yes same sound same thing.. all people I have tried have been my contacts..

Thx for fast reply :)

I've just done a search on those sounds on the server, they are onthere.

Could you go through steps 4 and 5 mentioned in post 1 and post ping and tracert info?

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Sunshine on 06-07-2005 at 04:57 PM

Step 4: correct

Step 5:
I see one time out, this could be the cause of the problem
ev1s-67-15-31-198.ev1servers.net [67.15.31.198] is the one that times out, you may wanna check your hosts file (info on howto in post 1) if anything is inthere blocking it and/or set that one to trusted sites in your firewall and other programs that may block it.

Thanks for your praise :D

Frenchy21320:
I don't see anything wrong in the tracert, have you checked everything else in the first post? Wordfilter etc., also what is your firewall? Also note that you should not uninstall IE (if you did this reinstall it), doesn't mean you have to use IE as your browser, windows just needs it for certain things.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Frenchy21320 on 06-09-2005 at 03:19 PM

I don't use the Wordfilter,  IE is installed also I use Windows Firewall.
Thanks for the quick response!

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Sunshine on 06-09-2005 at 03:24 PM

Have you done a windowsupdate lately, if not i advice you to do so. What happens if you try another sound (or try same one again), is it like this with all sounds?

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Frenchy21320 on 06-09-2005 at 06:04 PM

I just took a look at windows update and apparently I'm up to date. But yus, tis the same with all sounds I recieve.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Sunshine on 06-09-2005 at 06:09 PM

Just had word the servers are beeing worked on, causing this problem ("try again" message). The servers are expected to be fully operational and better-than-ever starting this weekend (words from Patchou). Sorry for the inconvenience.

Edit: you're welcome, and thank you :D

BlacKMarKeT, how long has it not worked for you? It could be the server is under maintanance or just extremely busy.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by BlacKMarKeT on 07-05-2005 at 04:50 PM

It never worked.. I can access the page sounds.msgplus.net in explorer and firefox but i can send or receive sounds in MsgPlus

Same thing here. And it is definatly Messenger Plus. I can use the old sounds I already had. But not the new ones. All my friends who all have different computers have the same problem. It's the server or something.. Maybe it's full? :undecided:

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Patchou on 07-15-2005 at 07:23 AM

It seems that one of the sound servers is currently experiencing some difficulties. We are currently checkign that out, everything should be back to normal by tomorrow, sorry for the inconvinience.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by lord checha on 07-18-2005 at 11:05 PM

A friend of mine is having a weird problem, whenever she tries to send a sound she gets the error about the 5 custom emoticons limit, we already tried a few things but nothing changed.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Sunshine on 07-19-2005 at 10:26 AM

The 5 custom emoticons limit has nothing to do with Plus! customsounds, its a MSNM thing.

I suggest a reinstall of MSNM. If a regular reinstall doesn't work you can try a totally clean install. To do that uninstall MSNM, reboot, remove all  folders pointing to MSNM in Program files folder and the MSNM one in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft (removing this folder will make you loose all customemotes and backgrounds you have - and those of all who ever used your MSNM, if you only want yours to be gone find out wich number corresponds with your account here and remove that folder. If you don't see this folder it means you have folders hidden, to make em visible go into a folder and in the menu choose "tools" go to "folderoptions", then to view tab/second tab. In the list you see there scroll to hidden folders/files and check the box to show them),  reinstall MSNM.

If you want to get rid of the 5 custom emotes limit you can install SPNG, this has the option to remove this limit.

Ablaufverfolgung beendet.

My OS is WinXP with SP2
Connection is WLAN with software firewall and hardware firewall/site filter/adban's

Everything worked well - until today.
Something wrong with the server(s)?
Weird that there's no timeout (trace route) + I can reach the sound.msgplus.net site with both firefox + IE

Btw, is there any way to search for or add specific sounds from the toplists?

EDIT: Ok, figured out the "play toplist sounds" thingie lol... sound id! hehe
But I still need help with playing/sending sounds though...

EDIT2: The integrated sounds work well...and I can listen to the custom made/downloaded sounds as well.
Only problem is that I cannot send 'em.:^)

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Patchou on 07-27-2005 at 12:18 AM

The server doesn't seem to have been experiencing any problem today, did you try checking your firewall settings?

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by SmashD on 07-27-2005 at 12:44 PM

Well, I have deactivated both firewalls (sw+hw) and set my router to DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) with my local IP adress to let all through.

Guess? Nothing changed... still cannot send any sound.

Is there any way to re-install msgplus completely but keeping the custom away-status, sounds, ... ?

EDIT:  (sorry for all those edit's hehe... but that pi**es me off and I tried for about 5 hours now)
I can record my own sounds with microphone and succesfully send 'em to the server, BUT as soon I want to send ANY sound it says "Service unavailable, please try again later" or something similar (german error message).
Only the integrated (with text message) sounds work properly...
Waaaaah! ;)

Yes, thats possible. You can save your settings by going to Plus > Preferences..on the bottom right you will see save/load. Save all possible settings and place that file outside the Plus! folders (so it wont be deleted when you delete that one). You can save all custom sounds by making a soundpack: click the Plus! icon in main MSNM screen > open soundlibrary > add new sounds > export existing sounds...

After you've done all that you can uninstall Plus! including preferences and plugins, reboot, remove Messenger Plus! folder(s) from programfiles folder and then reinstall. Load the preferences same way as you saved them and add your personal soundpack and all will be as it was ;)

Good luck! If it isnt working after that check all possible causes/solutions in the first post of this thread again. Let us know if its solved.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by SmashD on 07-27-2005 at 02:15 PM

Hmmm... well grat news/bad news lol

Great news:
Everything is working fine again.

Bad news:
I don't know why.

Here are listed the last ~3 steps I did (from about 200 lol):
- started MSN with Plus! and all plugins I have: did not work
- started MSN with Plus! and NO plugin: did work
(by moving the whole plugins folder to desktop)

So I thought one of the plugins is causing the error > I moved the plugins folder back and started MSN...
- tried to send a sound without deactivating any plugin: did work

Well, I don't know the plugin/app/whatever caused my sound sending problems... but, hey, who cares!? Everything is fine again!
I did not change anything, just moved the plugin folder out of the msgplus folder, started MSN and Plus, closed 'em, moved plugins back into msgplus folder, started MSN and Plus > FINE!

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Sunshine on 07-27-2005 at 03:32 PM

SmashD, if you don't know then i don't know either :P
But i'm glad it's solved now, well done (Y)

If this happens again disable all plugins then enable em one by one again to see wich one caused it ;)

Thanks for letting us know how you solved it, others might benefit from this too :)

Go through all the steps in post 1, also do not uninstall Internet Explorer even if you use another browser. Simply set the one you use to default.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by JBinKC on 09-07-2005 at 02:20 PM

Alright guys.  I too cannot get the custom sound feature to work.  This feature has never worked for me and I have tried everything.  I can not run option 5 do to administrator issues on my PC (I'm using a work PC).  I don't believe it is a firewall issue because my co-workers PC's work fine.  I have disabled all plugins, there is no word filters and still nothing.  I cannot upload a custom sound.  I go through the whole add new sounds...but nothing saves when I finish and I get no error message.  When I try and receive custom sounds I get an error message and it will not download the sound to play.

Do any setting in Media Player or IE impact the Plus features?

Please help if you can...as you can imagine, being the only one without sound is frustrating!!!!

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Sunshine on 09-07-2005 at 02:40 PM

JBinKC, can you reach http://sounds.msgplus.net/ ?

Custom sounds feature works on your co-workers pc? Have you tried shutting of the firewall? It may also have to do with your companies network..or the isp...it's hard to determine where the problem lies, certainly if you can do a ping/tracert.

Uploading sounds may cause troubles atm as the server might be full.

Yes, I can reach the sounds page.  Yes, the custom sounds work on my co-workers PC's.  I realize it is hard to diagnose without the ping or tracert but I am really struggling with what I can do.  I wouldn't think it would be a firewall or network issue due to my coworkers having no problems.  This is why I am looking for a possible setting outside of MSNM.  I would assume it uses Windows Media Player as a foundation to run sounds...so is there a setting there I can try.  Possibly the codecs?

Codecs hmm, you could indeed try if a reinstall of WMP 9 series works.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by JBinKC on 09-07-2005 at 03:04 PM

Of Course I don't have rights to do this.  How about getting my codecs updated?  It currently isn't set to update codecs and I have no clue how old the ones loaded are.  Any IE setting I could check?

Thanks for all your helps thus far.

If you can't install programs on your computer then i suppose you can't install codec packs either :(

If you can this one might help: K-Lite Codec Pack, go for the standard one ;)

Windowsupdate might be a good idea aswell, if possible in your case.

if you mean by "coworkers" your coworkers PC's then the firewall can still be an issue. Firewall and internet settings are per PC. It might be well possible that the firewall and internet settings on your PC differ (or are stricter) than those on your coworker PC's...

btw, all this is "outside msnm". The custom sounds have nothing to do with msn messenger, it is a pure Messenger Plus! feature. ;)

There are no special codecs required for the custom sounds; it should run fine on the standard installed codecs of Windows.

See if you can play an MP3 file in Windows Media Player. If you can then you can also play custom sounds (not that custom sounds use Windows Media Player (because they don't), but with this you can check Windows and its ability to play MP3/waves; so just to rule that out).

------------

I should realy advise to try the tracert and ping though.
RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by JBinKC on 09-07-2005 at 06:35 PM

I ran the ping and tracert.  However due to not being able to mark the objects I only have print screens and can't capture them to paste them here.  Can I send a PM to somebody with them attached as a pdf?

You can upload the pictures to f.e Imageshack and post the links here. I don't know if imageshack will work with a pdf though. You can also attach files to your post ;)

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by JBinKC on 09-07-2005 at 06:44 PM

Attaching sounds easier....but it will not let me attach a pdf or xls file. So here is a doc file.

Hmm, why has the doc dissapeared (please re-attach, someone else might want to have a look at it incase i overlooked something)? I did have a look at it before though (not downloaded) and i don't see anything wrong in it..meaning no timeouts, i did not see if there were any package losses.

Have you tried it with shutting down the firewall yet (that is if you can turn it off)? Also have you tested if you can play mp3s, as Cookie suggested you to do?

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by King Kane on 12-10-2005 at 10:16 AM

I would say I have just one problem:

It may sound stupid to you, but not to me.

I made some Custom Emotion Sounds myself and I always ticked the option that says something like "Sound will not be available for other users" (I could only tell you the German name).

I thought this meant "Your friends won't be able to steal your personal sounds" and not "Your friends won't be able to hear them at all".

And now, that's the stupidity:
I can't find an option to change that matter.

If there is one, I am just as blind as always. Please tell me where to find it.

If there no one, I want a good, reasonable explanation for that, please.

"Mark private" only means the sound won't come up when another user uses the random sound feature to get new sounds. The sounds will still get into the soundlibrary of the person you send them to (they can't hear them otherwise and if they want they can pass them on too). Once you marked a sound private you can't change this.

The reason why your contacts can't hear them might be because your sound(s) didn't get uploaded (servers full or other temporary serverproblem), try again later on and it will work.
RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by F10283 on 12-15-2005 at 12:26 PM

Hi im having exactly the same problem i cannot send custom sounds nor can i recieve then all i get is "there was an error contacting the server please try again later" i have tried disabling my firewall which still does not work.

Looks like a routing problem, Even though you are able to connect, it's very slow getting there.

What kind of internet connection do you have?
RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by F10283 on 12-15-2005 at 07:17 PM

Im currently on a maximum 56K connection although im getting a report that it may be ISDN 112K i have my modem set to maximum port speeds and i have data compression/error correction enabled. However when i did the ping tests earlier i may have had internet applications running in the background. I will try again without Messenger running and post the results

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by wj on 12-15-2005 at 10:23 PM

You may see alot of problems using the feature at 56k speeds, I've never tried it at that speed so I cant say.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by F10283 on 12-15-2005 at 10:52 PM

do u think i should try an internet accelerator and then try and run custom sounds? do you think that would work?

Mind you it probably is something to do with my internet speed as ive had no real result in finding out exactly what it is. Ive had some sites tell me 112K and others tell me 38.8K. So all i know is its somewhere between 112K and 38.8K

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by denviks on 01-19-2006 at 02:14 PM

hi. i downloaded msg plus last night. my mate did so at the same time. his works and mine doesnt. i get no sounds at all that he sends. i get this after the name of the sound he sends ( try again ). its not automaticaly downloading itself. when i click on it it just flickers and does nothing. if i create a sound it uploads to the server ok but will not send. it says server is not availible. i have checked all the other settings ie firewall ect ect but no joy. i even disabled everything as sujested but still nothing, i am running on firefox and my internet exp is still installed an up to date. i am now at a complet loss. heres the results of the ping

And my problem is that i can't send custom sounds that I have made, and I can't receive custom sounds that other people send me, i get the message that the dowload has failed and if i click on try again it just fails again.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by Sunshine on 07-13-2006 at 10:29 PM

hammers,
Do you filter out "says"?
Have you tried with your firewall turned off?
Any plugins that might interfere (turn em all off then try again)?

I don't see anything wrong in the tracert.

RE: Custom sound feature error report thread by hammers on 07-14-2006 at 10:58 AM

I am using msg plus! with msn 7.5 btw and not msg plus! live, if that makes a difference. I haven't filtered out anything on purpose, i have tried with the firewall turned off and it didnt work still, and I havent downloaded or installed any plugins. Everything else works just when someone sends a sound to me it says that the download has failed and tells me to try again, I click on try again and it just fails again. I can still play the original sounds that come with the msg plus.

Any reason why it doesn't work that you can see?

??? Any idea???

This is really annoying that all of my friend's sounds work and mine dont :@
OK i have just installed windows messenger live and Messenger Plus live and it still doesnt work. Do you not have any idea of what could be the problem?

I really don't know besides the stuff already mentioned in this thread..firewall, filtering, plugins, patches etc.

If you went throught all those then i'm sorry but i honestly haven't got a clue....

Hmm, i don't think there's an easy way to do that at the moment... seeing as the Messenger Plus! Sound Library Fixer isn't updated for use with Plus!Live yet.

I think best way to go would be to go back to MSN 7.5, use the soundlibrary fixer if need be, then make a soundpack....If you have windows messenger you can reinstall Plus!3 then log into that and make a soundpack.

There is no need to uninstall Plus!Live btw (it won't hook to MSN Messenger)...but you will need to reinstall Plus!3

Backup your Plus!Live preferences before you do so....just in case ;)

@kawaiidesune

Hello,

Could you please be a little bit more specific?
What is the problem that you're having?

I assume that you've started with tracert only after you had experienced some issues with the sounds..

Do you get any error?

Yeah, I get the generic "An error has occurred while contacting the server, please try again.." I also cannot connect to sounds.msnplus.org or whatever it is, but no MsgPlus addresses are blocked in my hosts file.
