Most lyrics site have spyware on them that they get you to install. Try getting Spybot to check for any possible spyware

RE: DAM POP UPS by DTZuko on 05-03-2005 at 05:13 PM

Oh hey... I have Ad-Aware SE Personal... but yeah ill try spybot thanx mwe99

RE: DAM POP UPS by Savior on 05-03-2005 at 08:31 PM

Also install the Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1 version that should get what spybot and adware don't

RE: DAM POP UPS by mwe99 on 05-03-2005 at 08:35 PM

Isn't that MS Antispy supposed to be poor?

RE: DAM POP UPS by mad_onion on 05-03-2005 at 08:36 PM

no it is very good. better than the major alternatives imo opinion and thats not just me a lot of people agree.

RE: DAM POP UPS by RaceProUK on 05-03-2005 at 09:28 PM

I personally recommend SpyBot S&D.
And a guy with MS logos as avatar and sig says MS product is good

RE: DAM POP UPS by Supersonicdarky on 05-03-2005 at 09:32 PM

just use firefox, blocks most pop-ups and i think it doesn't support active-X :D

RE: DAM POP UPS by Chris4 on 05-03-2005 at 10:05 PM

Don't use Microsoft Antispyware BETA. Didn't work at all for me.

(y) My favourite anti-spyware program. Gets rid of all spyware etc. very good.

Tell me if they've gone :)
RE: DAM POP UPS by Zephyr on 05-03-2005 at 10:14 PM

I still prefer Ad-aware SE and Spybot and I don't think that's gonna change. I've had them for ages.

Thats becuase there isn't a lot of spyware written to get through Firefox as IE is so much more popular. As Firefox becomes more popular though, I'm sure we'll be seeing more firefox spyware.
RE: DAM POP UPS by Caboose on 05-04-2005 at 04:44 AM

Microsoft's AntiSpyware works better then Ad-Aware & Spybot Search & Destroy combined (I've seen many many tests done), so I would suggest you get MS AntiSpy. No one program catches all spyware though, so it would be a good idea to also install Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D (Y)

RE: DAM POP UPS by segosa on 05-04-2005 at 06:48 AM

Look. Get all 3, update all 3, scan with all 3 and the problem is solved. There is no need to say one is better since unlike antiviruses the more you use the better.

I'm not so sure. A lot of spyware uses ActiveX to get installed, and FF doesn't support it without an add-on.

Some extensions have popped up for Firefox which are attempted to be forcefully installed and add search bars and display popups etc :(

Is it just me, or is IE with SP2 better than Firefox in blocking pop-ups?

Tell me if you don't get any pop-up when you open this site using Firefox without any additional extension.

RE: DAM POP UPS by mwe99 on 05-04-2005 at 11:01 AM

Whenver i go on mess.be the IE bar pops up to tell me the pop up's blocked. I occasionally get a small annoying pop up but they're gone :)

RE: DAM POP UPS by RaceProUK on 05-04-2005 at 12:30 PM

RE: DAM POP UPS by Jhrono on 05-04-2005 at 12:54 PM

I can't believe you guys forgot about this program: Spyware Blaster.

That will stop all the warnings coming up saying, "Do you want to install so and so". It only stops the baddies and has a HUGE database.

I have never gotten a bad install since! And I don't get spyware/adware etc any more.

IE's popup blocker blocks all popups. Even ones that appear when you click a link.

Firefox's only blocks unrequested popups which are ones that occur in certain JavaScript events (which you can see in about:config under "dom.popup_allowed_events", mine shows "change click dblclick mouseup reset submit").

"Alot of adware is made for IE because it is written in Visual Basic, which yo can hack into easily, however Firefox is written in Mozilla, which is less hackable making it more secure"

RE: DAM POP UPS by user27089 on 05-04-2005 at 03:19 PM

I have the following removal programs on my computer:

  • Spybot Search & Destroy
  • McAfee Antivirus
  • Ad-Aware Professional SE
  • TweakNow RegCleaner
  • Spy Doctor Pro
  • Registry Mechanic
  • Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta

they're all really good...

Understood
But, what setting should I change then if I want to eliminate mess.be's pop-up or similar other sites' pop-ups?

Edit: btw, I have the same value for "dom.popup_allowed_events"

It isnt, afik they are both writen in C or C++.

One of the reasons firefox is better at preventing spyware is the fact that it isnt an intergrated part of windows. Also it doesnt allow you to install direct from a site, you have to download an installer.

What "change click dblclick mouseup reset submit" means is if you click on a submit button, double click etc. it will allow a popup.

So.. I think it's fine as it is.

Your IT teacher doesn't know what he's talking about. IE and Firefox are written in C++, where spyware can be written in VB (to make it easy to attach to IE) or C++ (to hook into the system at a lower level e.g. keyloggers).

Hmm yeah good point. I didn't think about what those events actually were but I see now they're the ones to allow, not block :P
