Feature suggestion: server-based Messenger Plus! settings by Uwe Keim on 05-05-2005 at 08:56 PM

I'm using MSN Messenger from multiple locations (office, home, laptop) with the same user account.

It is difficult for me to keep all settings, both for regular Messenger and those for Messenger Plus!, synchronized across all my PCs (e.g. the renamed contacts in the contact list).

Here is my suggestion:

Provide support for storing the settings on a central server. Let the user specify how to access the server (e.g. by FTP, HTTP or a similar popular protocol).

Since I have my own FTP server, I would just have to enter the FTP account data into a Messenger Plus! dialog box on all of my PCs and Messenger Plus! would be able to store all of its settings on that server only and fetch them whenever I login at a certain PC.

One step further would be to be able to store the FTP account data on a centeral "Messenger Plus!"-provided server where my MSN Messenger User account is associated with the FTP account data. This method would allow Messenger Plus! to fetch the FTP account data based on my MSN Messenger identity and then fetch the actual Messenger Plus! settings from the FTP server.

Of course a more simple way would be simply store all Messenger Plus! settings directly on a "Messenger Plus!"-provided server, but probably this would require too much storage space.

Thanks
Uwe

This has already been suggested, and the answer will always be no, as the servers would need to be worldwide, merely because it will be too expensive, and just 1 or 2 servers wouldn't be able to handle it... There would be over 40 000 000 people's preferences being saved and downloaded on a server as people log in and out of messenger. Now how bad would that be...

It's a good idea, it's just not possible at th emoment at time sorry...

Thanks for your reply!

I do understand that providing a Messenger Plus! server would be too much.

But being able to store and retrive from my own (FTP-)server would already be a tremendous improvment for me. This would not require any Messenger Plus! servers at all, If I understand correctly.

Thanks
Uwe

That would actually be a good feature... I'd be glad to see this incorporated...

you can save your settings then just send them to youself

plus-> preferences

and then at the bottom of the page,
'Save\Load'

this will save or load your current settings to a file so you can transport between computers.

hmm making some kind of server variant of it, so you can safe settings on the server is coo, yet you could also make a domain (your self) and store pc info including msgplus! settigns on that hdd...

I'll write that in my todo list, that's a nice idea indeed (and that's feasable now that a big server structure has ben created for the custom sounds feature).

Hi,

Messenger Plus would still require a little bit of information stored server-side... to actually detect if that user has information on another server where his settings are located and wether or not to load them.

Good idea though, hope it does get created (Y).
