i have 2 questions.... by TheMusicPirate on 05-08-2005 at 03:12 AM

i have 2 questions..

1) is there such a wire that allows me to connect to computer via usb, so that i can transfer files?

2) when i formated my computer and deleted the partition on my main drive it show 2 partitions one have 75gb and the other had 5gb, how did that happen, i formatted my computer so shouldn't my harddrive be back to normal?
i'll try to upload a picof the screen that shows the two partitions.. on the C: drive.

thanks.

EDIT: here is a screenshot of the problem
EDIT: this is after i formatted my computer. the second partition at the bottom is my other drive.

Formatting doesn't affect the partitions. You have 5 GB of unpartitioned space there. Once you install Windows, you can create a partition there, or you can, from that screen, delete the 70 GB partition and use all the space in one single partition (if you delete the 70 GB partition, any data there will be lost).

Not sure if it's exactly possible through USB, and I think i'd be pretty slow. You can however, connect the two over a wired/wireless network using a hub/ethernet cable and transfer pretty fast.

that's what iam planning on doing is, having a wireless network. but for now just to install software on my computer b. becasue all the software are on dvds and the seconds computer doesn't have a dvd drive.

You don't have two partitions in that disk, you have one partition (C:) and 5 GB of unpartitioned space (unused).

Did you install Windows or not?

If you didn't and are still in that screen, select the C: drive and press the D key, then follow the instructions in the screen to make a new partition and give it all the available space.
This will create one partition with all the available space.

If you did, go to Start > Run, type "compmgmt.msc" and click OK.
Then go to Disk management (penultimate item in the list, above Services) and right click over the disk partitions graphic to see the options (you should right-click the unused space and select Create new partitions).
This will create another partition of 5 GB and won't touch the 70 GB one.

Those names could be different as I'm using Windows XP in Spanish and don't know what the names in English are.

And about the file transfer, the fastest and easier way would be taking out computer B's disk and connecting it to computer A, copy the files, and put it back again. However, you should do it carefully and you should know how to configure the disks as master or slave :-/

When formatting a hard disk, Windows likes to leave a portion at the end unpartitioned. You could install Windows, and then use a third party program to resize the 70 GB partition to take up the leftover 5 GB as well. Note that hard disks are measures in so-called Japanese Gbytes, not true gigabytes, so an 80 GB disk actually only has 74 GB of space, like 4.7 GB DVDs with 4.38 GB of space (more info).

There is no official USB file transfre thingy, but there are some solutions using specialised software. (Google Search: USB file transfer).

Please never do that... Those third party partition manager programs can cause trouble...

I have heard of unreliability using partition managers, but PowerQuest PartitionMagic 8.0 has never caused me any grief. Not to say it will be as perfect for someone else.

At that screen, just highlight your current partition, press D, then it will delete it, then install windows into that 'Unpartitioned Space' and select NTFS Quick. All done :D

When making a partition on a disk that has none to begin with, Windows sets the maximum partition size to a bit less than the amount of space there is.

-i'd say the best bet is if you can afford to wipe the drive clean just delete all partitions and make one the full size of thedrive

-you will always have like 8 mb of unused space

- the day after built this pc and installed windows i changed the size of 2 of my partitions and had no problem with partition expert, weather youd be wanting to do that with data on the drive is a different question

PartitionMagic makes a very good work(Y). I play with my partitions with that program and I never had a single problem*-).
